The title say's it all. The snack shop and cafeteria at work will only have diets drinks starting next month. I guess they're under the impression it's going to reduce the obesity problem. It's almost laughable if they had gym on property it would solve that issue and many more. With over 1000 employees should be easy enough. But instead they have zumba classes are other uselessness. Stupidity or lack of common sense in corporations make me chuckle sometimes!

My company has a small gym onsite for the maybe 200 people who work in the building. Not sure if anyone uses it. You need to have 2 people in the room for safety and not sure that is possible too often.

Caus artificial sweetners are soooo good for you. Diet soda not exactly good for the bones! Better of just banning all soda. Or, this is the libertarian in me....Let people decide their own fate!

I organized a yoga series in our workout room. (we have about 300 employees) We have about 5-10 people show up every week. It's somewhat strenuous going through the sun salutations but otherwise not too difficult.

Exercise doesn't affect weight. You diet to lose weight. You hit the weights to get stronger. Most people do both (aka New Year resolution to dietandexercise) but in reality they are separate.

Not even close. Your weight, irrespective of the gain in muscle mass associated with strenuous muscle activity, will vary directly with the number of calories burned compared to the number of calories you consume. We're all different, and we all have different metabolic rates, but adjusting either diet or exercise will affect weight loss.

I've lost 15# in the past few months, and most of it was due to initially hitting the gym hard. I noticed a huge change in WHAT the weight was, not just where. I like to spend time on the bike more than anything, and after a month of that my legs went from soft and shapeless to toned and better defined. I'm not saying I've entirely transformed my body like some P90X commercial, but working out allows me to eat more and still lose weight or keep it off.

As soon as I get busy at work and go from skipping the occasional day at the gym to missing whole weeks, I know I need to be careful. If I work out a lot less, but keep up my usual caloric intake, I'm sure to gain weight quickly! I can't enjoy afternoon subs and the occasional rich weekend meal out that stuffs me to the gills and expect to stay the same weight if I'm not working out.

Depends on your definition of exercise. I run 30 miles at week and frankly don't care to ever touch weights again. I've lost 15lbs in a month and have kept it off since April. Feel great. Not everyone wants or can exercise outside. 30 minutes on the treadmill before work would be easy for most.

That's my opinion also. Most that are overweight are also the laziest workers.. not all of course. Fire em or let them kill themselves. I don't drink but maybe one actual soda a month. Now sweet tea that's another story. I walk probably 5 miles a day easy and that's not counting what I run after. They should just switch everything to real cane sugar.

This happened to me this year. Due to work I was walking 15 miles a day 4 days a week, work changed, stopped walking and in 3 months gained a lot of weight and am working it off slowly but surely.

Best thing to do?
Ditch Soda, Sweet teas, Diet or Regular to begin with

I havent had a soda in almost 2 years! DEC 2010 I quit, and by DEC 2011 I was 195, down from 310 a year prior.

I attribute this mostly to quitting soda.

People say its hard? I get free soda where I work (Racetrac Gas Station), I was drinking a 64 oz mug of Dr Pepper every hour for 9 hrs straight everytime I worked!
THEN coming home and going through a 12 pack of soda every 2 days.

I see workplaces and schools do this all the time. Diet drinks are as bad as full sugar drinks but in different ways. Aside from carbonated drinks ruining teeth and leeching calcium from bones, diet drinks also raise insulin levels. But with no actual sugar to work on, it just hangs out in the blood and this makes people hungrier. Not a good combination. I only drink good old water, black coffee, and unsweetened teas. It may not be as tasty at first if you're used to sodas, but I can attest that at this point I can't drink any sodas because they all taste way too sweet to me now. Even worse than soda is actually fruit juices. People don't realize how much sugar is in those things.

On a side note, to the OP, I used to make fun of my girl for Zumba, but I tried it with her once and it kicked my butt! I'm sure I sweat more than I did on my usual runs. I still don't do it but I don't mock her anymore, that's for sure. I would call it far from useless.

And exercise is extremely important to lose weight. It's not all about muscle mass. Exercise, aside from burning calories, increases your metabolism and its very necessary when dieting because the body will try to lower your metabolism to counter the decreased caloric intake. Also lean muscle mass, the stuff you gain with cardio exercise, continues to burn more calories even when you're just laying in bed doing nothing!

THIS! I wish they would just use plain and SAFE real sugar. It is safer and tastes better. Ever had a Dublin Dr.Pepper or a Pepsi Throwback?? They are made with real sugar and the tastes is noticably smoother and better.

High Fructose Corn Syrup is the biggest thing ruing our bodies and lives!

It's a shame that the people who seem to have the least amount of knowledge about nutrition are making the decisions.

Soda pop is nasty, period. I'm not sure why anyone would drink that flavored toilet water. A study published in a 2010 issue of the FASEB Journal found that the excessive phosphate levels found in sodas caused lab rats to die a full five weeks earlier than the rats whose diets had more normal phosphate levels—a disturbing trend considering that soda manufacturers have been increasing the levels of phosphoric acid in their products over the past few decades. To top it off, soda pop is one of the leading causes of tooth decay in both adults and children-the daily doses of phosphoric acid also take a toll on oral health. Dentists have coined a phrase for it; it's called "Pop Mouth". I've never understood why anyone would drink soda pop-sweetened, unsweetened, diet or any other variation is just plain nasty and full of chemicals.

That is simply wrong at so many different levels I'm not really sure where to start. Diets are stupid-period. Lifestyle changes that involve proper nutrition and a balanced, daily exercise regimen are keys to staying fit. Sadly, far to many people believe like you do, and they constantly fail.

What's really wrong is imagining that any one regimen can work for everyone.

We're all different. Too much variation to have hard lines around the various options available.

I would most certainly agree that soda in any form is kin to poison.

When I was in the hospital back in April after my bypass operation, the dietician came around to talk to me about the evils of sugar and fat. I asked her why the hospital provided artificial sweeteners with the meals.
She had no answer.

I used to drink a lot of soda years ago but managed to give them up after I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Since my operation, I have given up all processed sugar. I get all I need through fruit and what occurs naturally in food.

I have lost 25 pounds since the surgery and can wear pant sizes I wore in high school 40 years ago.

As of now, I have 3 more rehab visits and then will hit the gym. I am not going back to what I was, in size and over all health. I feel better now than I have in years and I can bend over and tie my shoes without getting out of breath!

But, like posted above, let people make up their own minds.

My wife use to drink up to six diet cokes daily. She started seeing "floaters" in her eyesight. She read somewhere that aspartamane can cause floaters in your eyesight. She switched to green tea and her floaters were gone several days later.
