Exercise doesn't affect weight. You diet to lose weight. You hit the weights to get stronger. Most people do both (aka New Year resolution to dietandexercise) but in reality they are separate.
Not even close. Your weight, irrespective of the gain in muscle mass associated with strenuous muscle activity, will vary directly with the number of calories burned compared to the number of calories you consume. We're all different, and we all have different metabolic rates, but adjusting either diet or exercise will affect weight loss.
I've lost 15# in the past few months, and most of it was due to initially hitting the gym hard. I noticed a huge change in WHAT the weight was, not just where. I like to spend time on the bike more than anything, and after a month of that my legs went from soft and shapeless to toned and better defined. I'm not saying I've entirely transformed my body like some P90X commercial, but working out allows me to eat more and still lose weight or keep it off.
As soon as I get busy at work and go from skipping the occasional day at the gym to missing whole weeks, I know I need to be careful. If I work out a lot less, but keep up my usual caloric intake, I'm sure to gain weight quickly! I can't enjoy afternoon subs and the occasional rich weekend meal out that stuffs me to the gills and expect to stay the same weight if I'm not working out.
This happened to me this year. Due to work I was walking 15 miles a day 4 days a week, work changed, stopped walking and in 3 months gained a lot of weight and am working it off slowly but surely.
