Is it ok to add a small amount to diesel gas to a gas tank for upper cylinder lubrication? I'm not even sure if this will work. I basically trying to use Diesel in the same way that MMO and Lucas are used. Does anyone know if 1oz per gallon would be good?

I would not do it. Todays ULSD fuel have truckers complaining about lack of lubrication, and remember, it's diesel and it's dirty fuel. If your looking for lubrication qualities it would be hard to beat MMO.

Use MMO or a 2 cycle oil, rated with twc-3 use only one ounce to 5 gallons, no more then one ounce to 5 gallons period on the 2 cycle oil mix.

Can ATF be used in the same manner as MMO? I have read that ATF is loaded with cleaning detergents. I have also heard that it can be bad for seals within the gas system

I wouldn't use a solvent based product to lubricate my upper cyl. If this was my goal I would use some good 2 cycle oil.

Diesel is a heavier hydrocarbon than gasoline. It is lighter than MMO or 2-cycle oil.

Will it offer lubricity? Ehh... define a lubricant. It will create a bit more of a viscous layer, so perhaps you could say so.

That said, it is too close combustion-wise and may do other strange things. In a diesel engine, diesel fuel has a hydrocarbon range from say, C10-C16. Biodiesel is C18 and offers good lubrication.

But will diesel do the same thing, in an engine with a different operational characteristic? Tough to say.

Then after you do this you can slap yourself in the face and go back to MMO.

Lucas,

enough said.

I purchased my 2nd 32oz bottle of MMO from walmart yesterday for $4.00. Why is MMO so much cheaper than Lucas? Lucas is $10 for the same 32oz amount.

There are a number of suitable gasoline additives available.... well, there are hundreds and at least some of them are suitable.

Many diesel drivers add something to the fuel to improve lubricity. The notion of adding ULSD or kerosene or any other distillate fuel to gasoline just seems nutty.

This is good advice. MMO does some cleaning, and is a decent top end lube. 2 stroke oil does no cleaning [but may have very good anti deposit stuff] but is a VERY good top end lube.

From my reading back in the 80s, when the turbo era F1 teams were able to make their own witches brew fuels, diesel (or a pure equivalent) was a part of it, purely to get energy density up (and according to one author to delay peak pressure until the rod/crank angle was better for energy extraction).

Doubt that it would do much UCL wise, and in any reasonable quantity would rob you of octane.

Actually, pure D2 diesel has in fact more lubricity then MMO or Lucas, here is the study:

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=177728

From the above link:
Quote:

1) 2% REG SoyPower biodiesel
HFRR 221, 415 micron improvement.
50:1 ratio of baseline fuel to 100% biodiesel
66.56 oz. of 100% biodiesel per 26 gallons of diesel fuel
Price: market value

14)Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant
Gas or diesel
HFRR 641, 5 microns worse than baseline (statistically insignificant change)
427:1 ratio
7.8 oz/tank
$2.65/tank

17)Marvel Mystery Oil
Gas, oil and Diesel fuel additive (NOT ULSD compliant, may damage 2007 and newer systems)
HFRR 678, 42 microns worse than baseline fuel.
320:1 ratio
10.4 oz/tank
$3.22/tank

Lucas did slightly better than MMO so it's not just hype and marketing.
B100 biodiesel fuel is the best upper cylinder lube you can find, but this is for diesel engines, in gasoline engine MMO or Lucas will do just fine.
