Diesel exhaust regen and a UOA

My Powerstroke has the much admired exhaust regen with DEF and everything else Ford could think of.

Sometimes I notice the dash msg but mostly not. But if I am not on the highway then I can smell "hot" and assume the exhaust is in regen.

What if I did not notice the dash msg and took a used oil analysis sample during or shortly after would I notice anything?

Like fuel dillution?

Don't they inject extra fuel in the exhaust cycle in a couple of cylinders as part of the exhaust regen?

Yes they add some more fuel into the works to get the exhaust temp higher to burn the carbon and additional pee-urea. One of the main reasons I just bought a 7.3
I would like to know the trade off between lowering the carbon particulate and increasing the Nitrogen output
 
I would think one incomplete regen would not directly cause any noticeable fuel dilution. If your were constantly having incomplete regens over an entire used oil analysis...then that is a possibility. Maybe if you immediately took a used oil analysis sample after incomplete regen...not sure of it would register high fuel dilution...good question (I think that is what you are asking).
 
Do they add it via the engine or a 9th injector post turbo? I know most heavy duty diesels ( class 5 and up) have an injector behind the turbo
 
The Mitsubishi Triton has a extra mark above the high level mark...when the oil gets to this level you need to change the oil. So they are expecting considerable fuel dilution.

Yeah, rocket scientists at the Mitsubishi dealer filled the oil in my Outlander to the top "x" mark at the 15,000km service, instead of the middle dot... I suctioned the excess through the dipstick tube. It was about a litre, so yes, quite a lot of fuel dilution is expected. I'll be reminding them not to mess it up at the upcoming 30,000km service!
 
Yes. During the exhaust stroke the DDE will send extra fuel down to the DPF to burn and thereby increase temps.

You shouldn't notice it in a used oil analysis.

Here's how these systems work. EGR, SCR(UREA) and DPF

DPF- burns off soot.

EGR - recirculates some exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber to lower combustion temps which lowers NOx.

SCR - The introduction of Urea into the exhaust stream reacts with the NOX and the catalyst (SCR) which converts the NOx into N2, CO2, and H20. The SCR (Selective Catalytic Reducer) must get up to approx 200C in order to assist in the conversion of NOx.

At the dealership ?!! It's not the US, where people just decide to be a mechanic this week, like us your guys go through appreticeships and qualification processes before they can call themselves a mechanic. They should know how much it takes and what the X is for. We have a couple of work experience kids in at the moment (ones a girl), they wouldn't be let loose filling something without knowing how much and what the dipstick was for. Actually the girl was watching me fill a Hi Ace, and asked how did I know what oil and how much to put in, I took her into my office and showed her Castrol Netlube on the screen - what oil it needs and how much.

The 6.7 does indeed inject fuel on the exhaust stroke so that raw diesel makes it's way to the DPF, raising the temp to "burn" the soot. The fuel is injected really late on the exhaust stroke, so I suspect no real fuel dilution from it.
You'll regen by default about every 500 miles. Passive regen can occur when working the truck, like towing, or long highway trips. Short tripping and in town will raise soot levels pretty quick, as will some fuel adds.
BTW, don't blame Ford for the SCR, DPF and DEF injection. Thank your local tree hugger, environmentalist and the EPA for that. Emission controls come on every new truck. and they are all similar. If you feel like a rebel, there are certainly ways the put your truck on a diet and lose those unwanted underbelly pounds with a few tools, a few hours, and a tune to remove the regen virus from the ECM.

Yep, at the dealership. I suspect the first year apprentice did the oil change - that's pretty much what I spent my first year doing back in the day - and his work wasn't checked over by the workshop foreman before the car was handed back to me. Guess I should've started a $tealership bashing thread when it happened

I don't know where you got your information, but in the USA, it takes a lot of experience, usually through apprenticing, and qualification processes, to become competent and certified in any area. At least it did 25+ years ago.

I've traveled a fair amount, and have seen competent Mechanics and hacks, everywhere.

These days, I am hired to oversee people that work on extreme racing vehicles. I know there are some very talented people that work on these machines. It's rare when I have to step in and make corrections. None of them got to where they are, simply by "deciding to be a Mechanic this week".
