Did my engine started burning oil after 0W-30 ?

My memory may be faulty but I don't remember the car ever having burned any oil. The car is a 2007 Corolla with 27,000 miles on it. My most recent oil change was at 24,000 miles and I checked the oil recently and noticed the oil level is lower on the dipstick, and probably because it burned some oil.

Until this recent oil change, I was using AMSOIL 5W30 (started at 10,000 miles) --- at this oil change, I decided to put in a quart of Redline 5W30 (i had a quart lyin' around, purchased for 15 bucks from SpeedWorld), 1 quart of amosil 5w30 (last quart of Amsoil before deciding to switch to Mobil, Mobil is more convenient to buy) and 2 quarts of Mobil 1 0W30.

I guess I'll monitor the oil level carefully from now on.

I still have about 8 quarts of Mobil 1 0W30 left. After that, I guess I'll go Pennzoil Platinum 5W30.

Any thoughts about why I might be burning oil? A new engine is not supposed to burn ANY oil right? If memory serves me right, it hadn't burned any for the first 24K.

Do you check the oil in the same conditions? (Same sloped road, engine temperature?

Attempt one sump without the motley crew doing the oiling.

Are you sure you aren't leaking any oil? I would tend to suspect that maybe the filter or drain plug may have a small leak as opposed to the newer Toyota burning oil.

Always on a flat service (or virtually flat)

Oil is checked about 3 to 5 minutes after shutting off engine.

why would you mix 3 different oils?

I don't understand the need to mix oils! Stick with one! And stop trying to be a chemist you are not.

He was telling you not to base your oil consumption on a strange and IMO frankly questionable mix of three different oils. You will not get accurate data until you are running a single brand, blend, and weight of oil.

Without checking the oil perviously its hard to tell if your buring some. Go back to the same oil before the switch to 0W30 and monitor.

no, actually i wasn't trying to be a DIY-chemist: i had a quart of Redline lying around and some AMSOIL as well. I wasn't going to buy anymore of them as they were hard to get. Didn't want to waste them either so I just dumped them all in.

I suspect it is due to the mix of oils not the 0W30 oil. That is quite a brew.

I agree that it seems the 3 different brands might not like each other.
FWIW, I never quite understand the view that amsoil is 'hard to get'. sure, it isn't at the parts store or WM, but it could be shipped to you (for me, next day). I buy a case, I'm good for at least a year, no problem. since I do most of my shopping on line anyhow, it's simple.

In theory you should be able to mix oils, but I don't recommend doing it. Checking oil 3-5 minutes after shut down is not going to give a very accurate reading as oil is still finding its way to the pan. Try checking it first thing in the morning on level ground for the best possible accuracy. Even an hour after shut off should be fine, but first thing in the morning for me was always the best way to tell an accurate oil level.
