Did I catch this before it turned into a milkshake of death?

Just went to check the oil on our Volvo that the kid short trips to school and back. Do I have a big problem lingering that I caught just in time or is this just moisture?

I checked coolant, it's exactly where it was on the max line from several months ago when I topped it off. It does get short tripped a ton. She drives it to school just a half mile down the road. We are going north to the mountains today and we were going to take this car because of extra people coming this time (we usually can all fit in the van + food and gear)

I had an old s60 that looked like that and ended up being the thermostat. It would warm up to almost normal and stopped just shy. Just a thought

I'd suspect normal event with severe condensation from its location.
The dipstick tube can be a relatively cool place.

I've used the term "cold chimney" in the past although one usually doesn't think of chimneys being cold. At any rate its a dead-end kind of place that doesn't get regular hot flow and thus that kind of condensation builds up there.

Similarly, my Cobalt gets a little of that "milkshake" under the oil cap.... The oil cap is at the top of a kind-of lengthy tube and even that tube is isolated from the heat under the valve cover by an additional baffle. In the winter, I don't think the oil cap even gets hot.

I routinely get that under the oil cap but never had a dipstick look like that, minus the issue i mentioned above. My son runs my 2018 2.5 miles each way to school and back everyday and still haven't seen that. If you take a long trip and it's still their i'd start troubleshooting

I’ve seen moisture on both. A coolant leak that I helped a friend of mine fix on a Farmall 504 tractor made all of the oil look like a milkshake. As long as you haven’t seen a drop in level on the recovery tank, you should be fine.

When I went to I walked two miles in the snow. Uphill both ways!!

Thanks all, drove it up to the mountains (2+ hours) yesterday with no issues. Haven't checked the dipstick yet but I suspect it will be nice and clean after that drive.

This kid runs track and cross country, puts in hundreds of miles a year in with her legs, I can allow her to drive a 1/2 mile to school :)

What? You spent 2 hours on it, yet 30 seconds to check a dipstick is just too much time to check? 🧐

Long drive, change the oil, clean the dipstick and monitor. Short tripping is about the worst thing you can do to an engine.
