I'll try to avoid the "what should I use?" or "Which is the best?" mentality.

I need to drain the trans on my Land Rover with a ZF 4 speed auto. It calls for Dexron III.

I wanted to use the very best Dexron III I can get. I've looked into Motul, Torco, Redline, Mobil 1, and several others.

Any comments/suggestions on what is the very best in Dexron III atf for the German-made ZF? It is a really smooth, positive shifting transmission already, this is just regular maintenance.

I'm not flushing the entire trans, dropping the fluid from the pan replaces about six quarts.

I only tow light loads and off-road this Rover about monthly.

I'm leaning toward Motul, for no particlar reason; it is priced pretty good though.

I'm looking for longevity and cleanliness.

Thanks for your suggestions.

The best Dexron-III fluid would be a tie between Mobil 1 or Amsoil, at least in my book.

If longeivty is a concern, I'd drain the pan yearly and add an auxilliary transmission cooler.

Hi

I would use Dexron VI if you can get it.

Does anyone make that in synthetic yet?

For longevity, use an additional ATF cooler.
For cleanliness, install extra filtration.

Any full synthetic ATF is good enough.

I wouldn't use the thin Dex6 in a transmission calling for Dex3.

And, since most synthetics are multivehicle, I wager that a TES-295 ATF would be the 'best' for a Dexron III application. Delvac/Syncon/Transynd/Donax/TorqueDrive synthetics are some to consider.

lewk, Dexron IV looks like a definate improvement. Since PetroCanada is the only ones making it now, it will have to wait till my next drain and refill in November.

Thanks, good info.
