I'm been using this stuff in the sled the past 9 yrs. Didn't realize there was a controversy surrounding its use. Never heard of G5, HOAT, or OAT till reading this forum.

I remember the factory fill was green colored and probably OEM as I bought the car from a dealer (it had never been titled) with ~ 11kmi. At the time I switched, DC was the latest & greatest and my indy said it was OK, so I went with it.

I did have to replace the original radiator when the oil cooler section leaked into the coolant, turning it a muddy brown. Don't know if that was cooling related or not. But it's not uncommon (unfortunately). When I replaced a thermostat late last year, it looked really clean. No corrosion to be found.

The OEM water pump was also replaced ~ 45kmi ago but not due to leaking or failure. Instead the TB was replaced along with a bunch of seals and it was easy to do it. It looked brand new to me, bearings were still tight.

I have noticed a bit of dried scale sometimes where aluminum meats coolant hose, but it easily cleans off and the AL is not pitted or corroded.

This past week, I drained the system to replace the heater core, which was leaking. However, this is a well known fault as hot coolant continuously flows through the HC, even when the AC is running. This was the original one, so it had been in there 14 yrs and 181kmi.

I had a bit of coolant below the carpets on both sides, but not much. However, I did notice the coolant level would drop when the heat was used and I could detect a wiff of it when using the heat (also the windshield would quickly fog up).

My 'coolant' was mostly water. When drained nothing came out but slightly pink water: no scale, crud, chunks, rust, etc. But it's changed about every 50kmi. too.

What WAS really interesting was reading about how the old SAABs needed the factory stuff or what MB used. I always used the green stuff in my 85 900T that I kept for 14 yrs and 256kmi.

On THAT car I went through two head gaskets and three water pumps! Wish I'd of known then! My (same) indy never said anything about it. Of course, then we didn't have use of the internet nor BITOG.

I'd like to hear from some other Volvo owners with white blocks of similiar vintage. What's been your experience? I just paid $17 for a gallon of DC and not too keen on dumping it and redoing everything. So far, my experience with the stuff has been fine.

I have seen Dex Cool do worse things to vehicles that it came in from the factory. It would not be my first choice for a car never designed for it.

The Zerex application chart shows G-05 for Volvo:

My truck has used G-05 for 10 years and 116K miles with no issues. I've done a couple radiator drain and fills, but never drained the block or did any sort of flush. The coolant looks clean and the truck has never been close to overheating. The engine temp has never read over 209* F on the Scangauge. Different application, but it seems to be a pretty decent long life coolant for many applications.

Peak Long Life might be another good option, not sure though.

How much does Volvo coolant cost? If it's not really expensive, I'd probably just use the OEM stuff if reasonably available.

My experience was pretty much the same a yours: heater core, pin hole leak in the radiator over 160K in my boosted white block. My NA had the exact same issues on G48... I'd just stick with the DC.

I would not run Dexcool in a vehicle where it did not come from the factory with Dexcool. Peak Global would be a good choice or Zerex G-05 if that is what it came with from the factory.

Some Volvo white blocks actually come with Dexcool. My'98 came with it from the factory.

Interesting...due to the HOAT vs. OAT chemistry. I wonder when the switch was made?
