I have decided to to rather regular -every 10 to 15K- pan drain and fills on my old 97 f-150 with the 4r70 transmission.
It is factory speced for mercon, and from what I can tell, replacement fluids say that they are compatible with dexron or mercon. In fact, I think Valvoline Maxlife specs mercon/merconV and dexron III/VI.
Does this mean that one could use a dexron product in lieu of mercon? or is this ATF not as "good" at operating the transmissions as the specified fluids are? Thus inferring that dexron in a mercon tranny would be worse.
The reason Im asking, is that Ive heard very good things about Dex VI and if it was do-able, and since it costs the same as Merc V, I would think about substituting it for mercon on one of these drains.
