Dex III (H) Which brand most likely to meet spec?

I am using Mercon V in the 4L60E in my Vette. Actually all three of my vehicles, all of which specificy Dex II/III, have Mercon V of various brands.

I cant say I can really tell much of a difference from when they were using Dex fluids. Seems like the Merc V gives more of a slight 'bump' when switching gears, when the Dex was more of a smooth 'slide'. Buts thats probably my imagination.

The only auto transmission I ever lost (Nissan Re4R01a 4-spd), was the one that had Mobil 1 Dex/Merc, and the fluid was only a couple months old. Thats not proof of anything, just tossing it out there. It worked fine in my Toyota for the the better part of 4 years, including towing. I have heard the Mobil 1/4L60E horror stories, and I dont plan to experiment to prove or disprove that internet rumor.

I think the 4L60E will work fine on any name brand Dex III or Merc-V fluid you put in it. Just change it at short intervals and keep it as clean as possible, which is probably more important than anything else.

I was using Pennzoil Multivehicle ATF in my old Honda Civic as it made a huge improvement in the shifting and have been using it ever since. *HOWEVER* at my most recent change I noticed that it is no longer identified as a "synthetic blend". I emailed Pennzoil and they said that the Multivehicle is still superior to their standard Dextron III and meets the specs, etc. So I used it one more time but noticed that the shifting was not quite as crisp as it was before. I still had an old bottle in the shed so compared the back label with the new bottle. Besides the elimination of "Synthetic Blend" it now no longer claims to meet Allison C4, Porsche and several others specs. I would suggest that the boys at Pennzoil have quietly degraded their product. Shame.

My dealer used to use Castrol Import Multivehicle ATF (semi-synthetic). It worked great when I had tranny fluid and filter (4L60E) in Axiom replaced at 35-40K.
At 60K (actually 62K) service they used Chevron MD-3, and I did not notice any difference in performance.

Redline D4. Used it for the past 100+ thousand miles in my 92 suburban and several other highly abused vehicles and it has performed flawlessly.

You really should use DEXRON-VI, it vastly outperforms any of the previous iterations of DEXRON ATF products and is totally back-serviceable. So that's my advice, for what it's worth.

you might want to use some of the 'so called' DEX/MERC products that have no qualifications or guarantees whatsoever, but at least if you use DEXRON-VI, you know what you're getting, and you know that it's controlled.
