Dex-Cool Is A Good Coolant

Unless I'm misinterpreting what you're trying to say, Al, "0pen" or "closed" system configuration shouldn't matter. "Open" systems have (or are supposed to have) a hose inside the puke tank connected to the internal overflow/return nipple of the puke tank's cap - which in turn is a pass-through that connects to the radiator purge-return hose. That internal hose should extend down close to the bottom of the tank so that its end is always submerged in liquid inside the tank. That configuration would limit only liquid back into the radiator as the radaitor pulls a vacuum as it cools down after engine shutdown. This operational mode can fail if: 1> someone connected the radiator-puke tank purge-return hose to the external air vent/coolant overflow nipple on the puke tank cap, 2> the radiator cap is kaput, 3> the external return hose from the puke tank cap to the radiator filler neck has a hole or through-crack, or 4> a hole or through-crack has developed in the internal hose in the puke tank.

Ive had great success with dexcool. Every year I used to switch to 70/30 mix for the summer, 50/50 for the winter,

That is backwards if you are saying you are using a 70% solution of anti-freeze to 30% water. Anti-Freeze is not a good coolant and going to 70% in the summer makes the situation even worse.

Pure water is a way better coolant than anti-freeze so the lower the percentage of anti-freeze you can use the better off you are at cooling the engine.

With the old type anti-freeze a mixture above 70% was asking for a clogged radiator (don't ask me how I know). I wonder if some of the problems that people had with Dex-Cool were due to a higher mixture than 70%. The stuff that got my radiator on the old green Prestone was a brown mud like build up in the radiator. I have been using Dex-Cool since it came out in a lot of vehicles at mixtures no greater than 50% but mostly a little less and have not seen any mud at all in anything including my motorcycle.

I think Dex Cool can be OK in some cars that started from the factory with it.

But I've seen way too many problems to use it. A little air in the system and Dex Cool turns to mud, or worse.

I stick with the OE fluid or G-05 and distilled water.
