I too bought a new 74 Superbeetle Orange in color. I drove it on many trips and traded it in on my Harley. Bad move cause that bug was a blast to drive. Rust seemed to be the only trouble I had. I think I ran 30hd oil but today a 10/40 castrol might be a good choice.
VW Beetle=spring, summer, faller driver only unless you are in warm southern states.
10W40 HDEO or even 20W50 HDEO depending on what your oil gauge shows idle and at rpm.
Dump in at least 5 oz of Valvoline VSOT per oil change for those solid flat tappet lifters and your Beetle will love you for another 100k.
