Does conventional oils (Motorcraft or Havoline) meet the detergency levels of Mobil 1 Synthetic?

Which conventional oil has the highest level of detergency?
 
Good question, one I'd like to know. Additives play a more important role then the baseoils according to bruce381. I personally would rather have an oil keep an engine clean then worry about small differences in ppm wear.
 
base oil does play a big role as some are sweet and others are sour, and the end result does matter when the finished product is used... and yes the quality of the adds is also a big factor, but too many downplay the base stock in conventionals

Does a used oil analysis track the presence (or lack) of the chemical used as a detergent ? Could someone please exlain what this chemical is ?

This is actually kind of a tough question to answer, as we would want to compare TBN for PCMO's and not all product data sheets list this info.

In general, conventional oils run 7-8 TBN with the HDEO's up in the 11-12 TBN range.

Also, I'd want to consider how much TBN is normally retained at the end of OCI.

So, important factors are starting TBN, TBN retention, and the level of detergent additives (normally calcium) in the formulation.

Offhand, I'd expect the high mileage oils, such as Maxlife, to perform better in the detergency category.
 
Base oil's are are the first line of defense when it comes to wear protection, thermal transfer, etc. Additives follow and most come into play when the oil's protective properties are breached, such as dry starts/lack of sufficient oil pressure, high shear non-rotation zones where hydrodynamic films arn't able to be established. As it has been said, it's a package deal in it's entirety.

For what constitues as a detergent in an oil's additive package, I believe there's an index button on BITOG's home page - lubrication design...or something to that effect.

You're absolutely right about the importance of base oils' contribution to finished motor oil formulation. For those who believe otherwise, it's not mere coincidence that SM 5W-20 through 10w30 motor oils have abandoned Group I base stocks. But, the old "sweet" and "sour" unofficial designations were reserved for crude petroleum, not refined base oils. Even at that, those terms are effectively obsolete in this era of Group II, Group II+, and Group III hydrocracked base oils. Refiners can (and do) generate very high quality Group III base oils from the crappiest grades of crude - all it takes is sufficient energy and time in the hydrocracker.

I'm guessing that Calcium Carbonate (shows up as Ca) is one detergent, along with Zn (which may also be an Anti-Wear), P, Mo, Mg, and Sb.

Yes true Ray, BUT they first got their oil from a source that was great oil to begin with or crappy. The crude does matter, no matter what the numbers appear like, the end result is the product functions better when it starts with a better source. In the real world it does matter, albeit most consumers will never know.
 
As a ChE, I respectfully disagree:

Type of crude is not of overriding importance *if the Refining process is correct*...e.g. a majority of west coast group II/III is made from ANS crudes---lousy for base oils unless chemical change is used(ISOSYN, PUREBASE etc...are the trade names)...then it is a matter of how the refinery "sets the dials" so to speak.
