Believe me I tried, the guy wouldn't budge on the shipping, besides it was only $20. What I don't understand is that I can buy lots of stuff over the internet from lots of different companies and never pay tax. Dell charges tax. I wonder if they are handing it over to the government or keeping it?

The screen is very nice and it's not even their top of the line screen. It's XGA+. I adjusted everything and the screen is very bright and clear, good contrast, colors are vivid, no grainyness, no dead pixels and it's HUGE.

The sound quality and built in speakers are excellent and it seems to have an upgraded more powerful audio processor, it might be standard now.

If you call customer service after the purchase, they will usually upgrade the shipping or refund it completely. You just have to express your concern about the item's later than expected arrival or dissatisfaction with the purchase experience.

The biggest killer about any Dell...

I've found hard drives, motherboards, and monitors to be the true killers of Dells. At least more so than the amount of other brand computers I've worked on, but that doesn't include Gateway.

What brands were they? Just curious, as I'm getting ready to buy a Dell Vostro desktop, but would be open to alternatives if I could do better for the money.

Most of the Dells that have required parts replaced were Inspirons and Latitudes. I've replaced a keyboard or hard drive on XPS systems, but those aren't the most popular ones. In my personal opinion, the only reason Dell is useful at my job (I work at a college doing student/faculty computer support/repair) is because we have on site Dell warranty, so parts are typically in the day after we order them. That ways students aren't without a computer for very long. Though this could be biased because the students laptops are majority Dells.

Other than that, avoid Gateway at all costs.
