Delco PF63 nylon center core defects

For my 24 Tahoe I have been buying 12 pack cases of Delco PF63 filters, and usually splitting a case with my buddy who has a 21 Silverado and my Dad on his 22 Silverado.

I love PG-made filters and actually have a stock of MicroGard Select MSL51522 that I actively use on our 05 Suburban. But for this new truck, I thought well I’ll just run Delco and that’ll give GM one less thing to complain about in the event of a warranty issue with the powertrain. I also do understand that a warranty cannot be denied of your filter choice, but also am understanding of “hey if the filter takes it out” scenario… it makes one think and want to plan appropriately.

Any rate, I don’t inherently have a problem with the nylon center tube or Ecore design, the metal and caps are cool. But I do have an issue with some of the quality control on these nylon tubes. I inspect all filters I receive and am no stranger to defecting them out. Out of my 12 pack I have four that look very questionable. I receive four replacements for these , from Rock Auto, and three of the four replacements also have some poor quality control.

My issue with the nylon center tube lies with what appears to be access nylon from where the center tube was stamped, and little nylon “nipples” or “bumps” on the plastic cage that you can press against with your finger and they will flake off.

Additionally, one filter had a patch of glue on the media… the return side to the oiling system, I was able to gently remove that with a paring knife. So just to see how easily it could come off, I’m not going to use that filter.

So I guess it’s no more Delco for a bit for me. I have a case of MicroGard Select MSL10255 coming and these Delco’s are all going back to RA.

Now, could my inspections have revealed a complete “nothing-burger”. Sure… but I just can’t get myself to want to potentially have any sort of material coming off on the “clean” side of the filter. Just does not sit right.

I noticed since the new base plate design on the PF47E that the leaf spring is not sitting centered.

Looks to also be the same situation in your case just not as bad, whether or not it has an risks I am not sure but it does bring into question QC.

I also would not run that filter maybe it is fine but that defect is lack of QC and I would not trust it in my vehicle. Seems like First Brands is starting to ruin Champ now too.

Agree that the excessive plastic on the cage is not how it should be (obviously). These AC Delco might be the reason warranty is denied.

What are you thinking now?

The cleanest center tube holes I’ve seen are on Toyota oil filters, or others of that type made by Denso. Better yet are cartridge oil filters that use the same very well washed center tube over and over.
