There is a recall of millions of dehumidifiers made under various brands by a single company. They are said to overheat and have already caused over $10M in properly damage.

To get a refund you need to submit a picture of the label with model and serial along with a picture of the cord cut off.

If refund is approved you get a prorated refunds

A crappy deal if you happen to have a recalled dehumidifier.

Stores like BJ will also contact customers they can see from their records had bought a recalled item. (Unsure if anything sold at BJs is involved in this recall.)

Actually, they do have an expiration date.
In my experience, it's about three years.
That's about how long the POS's last.
This sounds like the experience that I had with a recalled dehumidifier years ago (probably the same manufacturer.)
Bought the thing at Menards on sale. Forget what the name was they were selling it under.
Had to go through the same gyrations as what was outlined. Pics of label, serial #, chop off/mail cord, etc.
Got a check. It was $40. more than I paid for it.
Sounds like the manufacturer hasn't learned any design lessons.
Chinese quality at work.

Some have these in crawl spaces and would not walk by them often and notice if it was glowing red hot or smelled with a overheated electric smell.

It really doesn't matter, the last ten years no dehumidifier has lasted more then 2 years. I have a 25 year old one that is power hungry and freezes up unless in warm weather and it is still running just fine. I can't use it where I need it, so I have to use modern ones that are throw away POS's. I was going to buy a small industria one , but I saw a couple people say theirs leeked out freon like the crap residential ones. So I will keep filling landfills until we can get quality built dehumidifiers. China at it's finest.

It is amazing what pieces of junk today's consumer grade dehumidifiers are. Especially Hisense. Avoid those at all cost. Went through 2 in two years at my mom's house. They throw an E9 code and stop running due to a bad humidistat. The sent me a free replacement unit which also lasted a year.

If you've got a working vintage wood-grained cabinet less energy efficient style, you are a fortunate individual. Hang on to that sucker.

In regards to that Danby recall, I own a ~15yr/old Danby unit and received that recall notice years ago. Mine didn't fall under the range of model/serial numbers. My Danby runs pretty much continuously from April until October. 15yrs and counting.

Neither of mine are part of the recall. I got them at Costco and figured I’ll return them if they don’t go 3 years before dying. I understand they won’t last 25 years like the old stuff but 3-4 feels like a reasonable time to expect out of a $150-$200 dehumidifier.

If you want a quality dehumidifier buy an Aprilaire. It's about $1000. It will last a long long time. Many are designed for crawl spaces and are more horizontal in shape than vertical. In many crawl spaces it's hard to get things into the crawl space because of the size and shape and only a small opening to access the crawl space.
