I changed the oil and filter on my wifes' 2003 Lexus RX300 a few weeks ago. I used a Toyota filter that I bought at the Lexus dealer for $9.00. The filter is made in Malaysia.....

Anyway, she comes home today and says she smells something burning....the filter was leaking from the seam where the end cap goes.....A direct drip onto the exhaust pipe. I swapped a Mobil 1 filter on it.

BTW - the filter is a real beatch to get off. It is hidden under the exhaust manifold.

Save it and return it to the dealer. Have him write it up and give you a copy. Tell him you would like Toyota's lab to test the filter and you would like a copy of the test report. Tell him should the engine be damaged due to loss of oil at some point in the future while you are the owner, you expect Toyota to stand behind their filter and potential future damage.

Be careful they don't try to lay the blame on your replacement aftermarket filter.

Likely nothing will happen to the engine but by having it in writing, you're covered.

Malaysia? Denso filters are usually made in Japan, Thailand, or the US. Maybe the dealer used a Nippon/Union/Beck-Arnley with a Toyota p/n on it...
