Against my better judgment, picked up four of these at advance auto on close out for 2.50 ea.

Two out of four of them has the louvers completely closed and would basically run in bypass mode and provide zero filtering.

Complete trash filter.

There's two pictures attached. These are not the same oil filter. One has the closed louvers the other less crappy. They have the same lot number printed on them which means that the quality control and consistency of their manufacturing is garbage.

Look at the cross-sectional difference in there.

The quality of made in USA is literally worse than the quality of made in Thailand or made in China and I think these companies believe the average consumer is too stupid to actually look at the quality and they will only look at the little flag on the outside.

This "made in America" filter will go to a made in Vietnam garbage can. Because that's the only use for it.

whats wrong with that? they all have that "band of metal" in them.. and the louvers look plenty open?

I dislike that style of filter but trying to understand what a good version looks like if that isn't one.?!
Could you post pics of one of the bad ones?

Unless I'm missing something, oil filter louvers in general should aspire to be those louvers in da pics.

EDIT: I think I get it...the second pic shows some poorly formed louvers, many without "hoods," presumably due to a worn die. But the holes are nonetheless quite open, a purely cosmetic flaw.

These actually look pretty decent. Unless this filter has some other detrimental defect, it would flow adequately. I’ve used filters, against my better judgement, with much less open louvers. We aren’t going to get Baldwin levels of louver opening in these filters. You can purchase hole center tubes if you don’t like these louvers.

The louvers in the two photos in post 1 look pretty decent to me. And they are open in both directions ... you can see the raised "hood" of the louvers facing towards the dome end.
