Dealership Filter Cost

I still find it funny. Took the Forester in for the $19 tire rotation because didn't feel like dealing with the lug studs if they break. The car wash and vacuuming makes it a deal.

Anyway...cabin filter and engine air filter have about 20k on them. The engine air fills up with grass and debris like crazy in this car. They want $100 to replace both 🙄 I go online, order the parts from Subaru to pick up at the dealer for $49. Saved $51 and literally takes less than 5 minutes, total, to do both.

Makes me laugh every time.

Yeah, if you buy the parts from the counter they charge more than if you order online and pick up in store. It's comical. And it should be illegal, in my opinion.
WM does the same thing - they have prices that are exclusive to walmart.com for pick up in store orders. I don't see anything wrong with it; it's just a way to incentivize certain methods of purchase.

That’s not a bad deal. I mean I do that work myself, but some people aren’t capable of doing that or want to.

Glad there’s so decent priced shops out there.

I suppose part of being a savvy shopper now is to check online while you're in store to see if it's different enough to buy online while in the store.

It's just interesting to me if they advertise a price in a flyer I think there are false advertising type laws. But if I go online and check the price and then run into the parts department to get the items it's A LOT more. Not just a couple bucks.

Anyway, I guess we just all have to be savvier 😂

Oddly enough, many Toyota & Nissan dealers sell parts cheap online, & allow pickup at the dealer with no shipping charges!
I called a local Toyota dealer to get a price on 'cargo lights' for our SUV. They install at the "port" as a factory-installed option but ours didn't come with them. When he parts guy gave me the price, I said something like "gosh-darnit (not what I really said), I wasn't expecting them to be that much...." and he told me "go to our website, go through the 'parts' link...." and said things are often cheaper there and sometimes they have sales. That takes you to http://parts.toyota.com/ and gives the option for "ship to dealer" for free. Thought it was odd that he didn't want a direct sale and offer me a discount. I'm positive that @bdcardinal has said that the parts counter folks actually make commission on parts sales. Maybe that's just his dealership or a Ford / Mazda thing.

YET.......another thread where it proves that's it cheaper to do things yourself than pay a dealer........

And the sun will come up tomorrow.....again.....

If your taking it in for full service, there is a markup plus labor. The $19 rotation is a loss leader to sell filters. Your also paying for those times that they checked it and sold you nothing.

The majority of the world has no idea how to change a filter. $100 to change both doesn't sound that bad to me actually.

Parts counters around here are often MSRP+. If you need same day you can order online at a discount to MSRP.

Toyota just had their black Friday deal. I ordered a bunch of stuff, very inexpensive. Nissan has free freight on $150+ order in January. Timely - I need a bunch of parts from them also.

Yeah, I bought some coolant at the Chevy dealer a couple years ago. They wanted $40-something at the parts counter if I remember right. It was like $20 on their website. When I brought it up they grumbled but adjusted it.

Good for you by saving and doing these simple maintenance items yourself.

Here’s an opposite experience. When dad his A4, he had my mom take it into the Audi dealer for wiper blades as it was a somewhat unique design. $18 each and they installed them. Also gave mom a bottle of water while she waited. ~15 minute job while she looked at the cars in the showroom.

Perhaps the job would have cost $100 at the VW dealer with no bottled water?

MSRP is probably $25-30 ea in filters. Let’s say the tech gets paid .3 to replace both $50-60. You think the dealer is really making money doing that? No way. $100 is plenty fair

Dealers around here would want $250 for that, so $100 is actually a very competitive price. Barely more than Jiffy lube.
So, you're saying it's all relative.

In my experience, there's no bargains at the dealer. For bitog 'diy' devotee, 'relatively speaking' dealer prices for CAF replacement especially, followed by AFs are going to be viewed as laughable. So, for the OP.....check.

Car wash, vacuuming, and a tire rotation is certainly a loss for them. I would have saved the $19 and done those myself. J/K, I'd have them do it for that price. ;)
