got a 99 4runner with 140k, bought it used at 90k, with brand new yokohama geolander (265/70/16). the car has been vibrating at high speeds so i figured the tires need balancing, i carry it in today and the guy said the tires were balanced ok, he said the inside of the tire or tires is prob causing this vibration. the tires prob have 25% of the tread life left, could bad tires be causing this?

If these tires are non-original (meaning that it's been on a different vehicle before), or the beads are going bad (cords broken), or your suspension (shocks,etc.) are on their way out, then yes, vibration is not unheard of.
Wifey's 92 4runner was on Geolander before (bought brand-spanking new) and was good down the 4/32" thread left before replaced with BF Goodridge.

Yes, the tires may be the culprit. If your wheels are damaged in anyway, that may cause some vibration as well.

Did they check each tire for balance on the machine, or just say it wasn't balance without checking?
If they truely took off all four wheels/tires and checked balance, then it could be the tires. Until that possibilty is eliminated you can't move on to the next (tire) option. I know they would love to sell you a set of tires.
Also they could get a good idea if there was a bad wheel by observing them as they checked balance.

Ok. Now if you don't have a bad (warped) wheel(s), it could well be the tires.
fwiw, I once had a slight vibration at > 55 after a balance and rotate at Discount Tire. Took them back, they checked balance and found 1 had one warped/bent (OE steel) wheel. Replaced the wheel and that fixed the issue.
Not saying that's you, but just a personal experience.
Let us know what you find out when you get resolution.

this is an extreme example but i see this kind of wear all the time, due to bad shock or strut, but the only thing you can do to fix it is replace shocks/struts and replace tires.

I've never personally seen wear like that on vehicles with only worn out shocks/struts. The ones I've seen were due to worn out steering/suspension components causing front end play.

we get them alot with civics at my dealership, most of the time if you look at the strut for that tire it is leaking, typically the rear as well. on these cars it is common and caused by tire bounce, but the same type of wear can be caused by ball joints.

I think this is caused by mis-alignment. Struts/shocks would cause the flat areas to be more widely spaced.
Of course the mis-alignment may be due to worn components.

yea i guess so, when i felt the vibration in the rear i had the tires rotated, and then for the first couple of days i felt the vibration in the front, but after driving the car a few more days i now feel the vibration in the front and rear, and it seems to be getting worse..

This still is sounding like alignment, but I can't discount there may be a mechanical problem.

If there is only 25% of the tread left, it's time for replacement.
