Dealer Oil Change.....Chevron?

My wife purchased her car before we met. When she got the '02 Maxima, she opted for the lifetime oil changes. While doing some preventative maintenance, I did notice that they utilize OEM Nissan filters and after my discussion today with the service department, Chevron 5W30. This arrangement, in my opinion, is not really that bad. This dealership will change the oil/filter every 3,000 miles, which may be overkill, but hey, it's free and her and her mom make a day of the oil change, my wife drops the car off and her mom picks her up for lunch and what ever else.

I feel any oil with a current API SN or SM, which I'm sure this Chevron must have, is capable of more than 3,000 miles. I just am looking for anyone perhaps aware of this oil, as I don't really see it other than in grocery stores under a layer of dust. These are Chevron Supreme. How likely is it that the dealer bulk Chevron is the same Chevron Supreme available at Cosco, etc.?

Here are some used oil analysis with Chevron 5W30:

I get the feel that Chevron runs a little thin in the 30 grade. I am finding that the car is using about .5-.75 quart every 3,000 miles. Thoughts?

Chevron makes really great oil. High moly iirc. There are a few uoa on here. Check them out. As far as dino goes they are as good as pyb
You found the uoa. Good. Should put your mind at ease. And 3000 mike changes mean you always have almost new oil in the crankcase.

My mom has this on her 98 Accord. I think it was ~$250 for lifetime oil changes every 3750 miles. We take it in every time there. Its been a great value.

off topic but this made me think of dodges lifetime powertrain warranty, as long as you own the car/truck the entire powertrain is under free replacement warranty.. could you imagina a young man say 21 buying a new ram pickup when this deal was in effect.. for the rest of his life he has free engine/transmission/diff replacement... im sure anyone would get sick of driving the same car forever.. but in theory with dodges deal they had you could.. sorry for the thread jack, just made me think of this

If you drive 15k miles a year you can recoup the cost of $250 in 2 years with 3750 miles OCI, with assumption of $30 oil and filter. After 2 years all OC's are free.

so my question is how do the dealerships make money off these deals? or is the cost built into the price of the vehicle when it's purchased?

When you come in, they try to upgrade the free LOF into a minor service for $50 more.

Im sure marketing studies have proven that whoever first suggests a repair, is likely to get the job. So, if the dealer finds bad brakes, they have a pretty good shot at getting that work. And so on. Especially once a car has over 30k on it, and that's when wearable items start to need attention.

The oil changes are a front to get you in the door. One on the hoist I'm sure they will find something that "needs" doing. It's genius actually. Especially a woman walking the car in. Cha-Ching

BINGO.... Also, they have very little overhead involved. At the last dealer I worked at they paid .3 hr to the tech for an oil change. So if that tech makes $30hr flat rate he get's $9 to change the oil. And the dealer probably has all of $6 in the oil & filter because they buy in bulk. So the dealers costs are covered for quite a while on that initial $250. And like said above, studies prove that if the person is already at the dealer and finds out they need brakes, etc., the dealer almost always gets the job.

I'm willing to bet it's tucked in the service agreement, and thus included in with the cost of the car....makes sense.

But yea, as mentioned, they are hoping to get upsells when the car comes through every 3-4k......I just can't fathom....Oil changes for "LIFE"? Really....? As long as she owns the car, it's getting free oil changes....? That's kinda bad [censored] :P

I noticed around here a couple lube joints offer a "bundle service.....I can't remember exactly, but I think it was 5 Oil changes for $80....you figure, $20 an oil change.....you are basically getting one free oil change out of the deal.....granted, you gotta pay that $50 up front (meanwhile, they are making interest on your $50 :P)

Yes it does. I'm either gonna mix it 50/50 with 10W-40, or go all 10W-40 next time; I haven't decided.

Years ago, a family friend bought a brad-new 1998 Astro Van, and got a lifetime OC package for a really, really cheap price.

He was a mechanic, and could any repair on a vehicle, but he took his van to the dealership every 3k on the nose for his free OC.

They were ALWAYS, ALWAYS trying to up-sell him on products and services - air filter, wiper blades, power steering fluid flush...etc...it drove them 'nuts' that he refused every last thing on the vehicle, just hid free OC.

He did a lot of driving with the vehicle, and figured he recouped the cost in less than a year!

Chevron is a top notch oil. You should have no worries.

I am actually looking into buying an oil change business and if I do I think I'm going with Chevron as my distributor.

Well, like I mentioned before. They would do anything they could think of to get out or warranty coverage I`m sure.
