Darkest beer?

Port Brewing in San Diego makes a beer called 'Old Viscosity'. The description is as follows:

"Not your Dad's Wimpy 30 Weight is how to describe this massive chewy and thick beer. Code named by our brewers-"The Big Black Nasty," this is monstrous dark ale brewed to no particular style. Thick and sludgy like oil from the crankcase of a wheat threshing combine, Old Viscosity blurs the boundaries of Porter, Stout, Old Ale and Barleywines."

BTW I've tried it and it was delicious! They also make one called 'Older Viscosity'!

Seriously, it's an acquired taste. Once you enjoy the heavyweight beers, the featherweights like Miller, Bud, Corona, etc just aren't the same.

Mmmmmm, milkshake beer.

Ironically, if I were working on a car all day, I'd probably want to drink... a pabst.

I can not take all this talk no more Hopslam is going to be found today...

I think some Dogfish Head IIPA 120min also 21.0 ABV

I like Celebrator just a little better, maybe I just like the goat ornament that comes with them.

If "thick" and strong are what people consider "dark" then a barleywine style (Sierra Nevada Bigfoot, Anchor Foghorn) would be on the list although their color is not super dark.

Optimator is great - Spaten's Dunkelweiss is pretty tasty, too.

If you can find it, Sierra Nevada Celebration and Saint Arnold's Winter Stout are good beers for the season. Young's Double Chocolate Stout is great. As stated, Guiness is a fine beer, but it fills you up like eating an entire loaf of bread per bottle. The Shiner Centennial that's only out this year is great. I'm always a fan of Sam Adams Black Lager, in fact I think that's the only good beer they make.

You might also keep your eye out at the liquor store for some Trappist ales. They're gonna be expensive, but they have a bold taste and ABV to match. Usually sold by the 750mL bottle. Gotta watch these, because in the words of Dave Chapelle, "It'll getcha drunk!"

Scored Hopslam $13.64 six pack worth every drop. Founders breakfast stout was in my grips will have to wait another day.

The darkest beer ("beer") that I know off the top of my head is Karamalz, which is an alcohol-free (
Maybe one of the Aussies here knows it. A friend who lives in Brisbane tells me they have Karamalz there.

Troegs is one of the closer breweries to me.
I didn't know they had distribution that far west. Good to hear.
Try their Mad Elf next year.

The good people at Saranac make one called Black Forest that you could only get in their "sampler" packs. Yummy stuff. Too bad they do not sell that brand down here. Another insanely dark and good one is the Brooklyn Brewerys Dark Chocolate Stout, wow.

I would think most any porter or stout would satisfy your dark urges. I have been meaning to try the Sam Adams Cream Stout, myself.

Enjoy your search for your favorite!

Saranac Black Forest is excellent. You can get it in at least six packs up in NY. I was in Utica for business and the hotel bar had $2 talls of Black Forest. That was a good night. We moved from Rochester, NY three years ago and I really, really miss access to Saranac. At least St. Arnold produces some good beer.

Shiner Black Lager is very good and usually I only like the Bock or Heffi.
