Ok, I installed a motorguard on my 05 silverado last fall. I now have roughly 6000 miles on the oil with filter changes every 2000 miles. The oil has become very dark. But when I rub it between my fingers it diesn't fill the fingerprint with crude and looks very clean.

I am using amsoil 5w-30. Is this a normal discoloration when using a motor guard.

Its definely not black, but a dark brown.

That is definitely nothing out of the ordinary. As long as you can still "see through" the oil on the dipstick you are fine. Something that I like to do is get a little oil off the dipstick and rub it between a finger and your thumb.

The only way to truly tell about the oil is to get a UOA done to see how everything is doing.

The oil in my Subaru is dark. The oil in the Camry is very light. I can't explain it. You can tell a lot by rubbing a little on a head light or chrome bumper.

It's more a function of the Amsoil as it is the filter.

Amsoil will darken to a state then remain there. Basically it will turn a dark "carmel" color and stay there for the life of the oil.

That's a true story, I am running a Dino in my Bigblock with a bypass and it is very clear/brown.

With a full synthetic in my Smallblock and the bypass the oil is still very dark/clear/clean.

Both engines have close to the same mileage!

I was pretty sure that there was nothing wrong, but I just wanted to check. I took alook at it today, and carmal is the perfect descripting. When I run it over my fingers it looks clean and on the dipstick it is fairly clear, just has that carmal color. I plan on sending off a sample at 10k just to see how it is doing. Im not worried, amsoil is supposed to go a year without bypass.

thanks for the imput.
