Daily Driver Oil Recommendations.

Hi,

I've got a 93 Ford Tempo as my daily driver that sees around 8k miles a year of mostly city driving and was wondering between 2 different changing options that I'm looking, at which you would consider to be the best.

1.) Run conventional Pennzoil conventional and change every 6 months.
2.) Run synthetic Mobil 1 Extended Performance and change once a year.

I figure the Mobil 1 is a better oil, but is it still better than the conventional when it's been in the car twice as long.

1, YB for 6 months
2. Mobil 1 Extended Performance for 1 year
Either way you are good. Consider the cost-vs- the labor and time for oil changes to evaluate what is a better option for you.

Really, you can go either way.
8,000 miles is not 15,000.

YB every 5 to6 months

Valvoline Synpower or Pennzoil Platinum every 8k miles is better cost effective option.

The Mobil EP is overkill. Regular Mobil 1 would be just fine.

Other than that, either way will work.

I owned this type of car and used just about anything I could find on sale and changed it at 15,000KM (9,000 Miles) without a problem. These engines are industructable. I totalled it with 300,000 KM on it and still running strong!

Mobil 1. Better protection and less changing hassle.

Why use Mobil 1 too expensive for this engine... I would use a good quality Dino like YB for the full 9,000 miles with a quality filter like Wix, Pure-One etc... Way more protection than needed for this engine... Like I said, they are indestructible!

I would run any quality synthetic with a nice filter (Purolator, Wix, Amsoil, Mobil1) for the full year with a used oil analysis just to verify somewhere along the way (6 months) to make sure the oil is in good condition. Be sure to check it regularly as well since oil consumption over 3000 miles isn't what happens over 8k-10k.

I only trust quality conventional oils to 6000mi. I know they go longer, but I just don't have the trust.

The thing is if, I'm changing the conventional oil every 6 months then it will only be seeing around 4k miles.

My main question is, is the synthetic still a better oil even after it's been in the car for 6 months and 4k miles than what putting brand new conventional oil in would be?

One other oil that I was just looking at is mobil clean 7500. What's your guys experience with that oil. It looks like it kind-of gives the best of both worlds. You get a closer price to the Pennzoil conventional, but the added protection of the synthetic.

I would use the Mobil and change it every 8000 miles.

Thats mee. I would never run a dino out over 6000 miles. Personal prefrence.

If it were my car, Id just run the Pennzoil Conventional with a good filter. Keep it topped up and change it every 6 months or so...

That's ~ $14x2 for 5 qt + $4x2 filters = $36 = 2 YB changes

vs. $6x5qt + $4x1 filter = $34 = M1 change

$2 difference plus 30 minutes of time advantage to using M1.

The question also becomes how do you feel about the oil sitting in the car for 1 year?

BIL owns a 1994 Tempo. One thing I noticed about it is it runs significantly better (2.3 4-cyl.) on thinner oils. He went from a change of Castrol High Mileage 10w30 (12.1 cst) to Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 (10.3 cst), and the engine ran noticeably 'freer' than before.

I'd use YB 5W-20 in that engine - Ford did back spec. that engine for it. If not comfortable with that, go 5w30.

I've actually been using YB 5w30 in the car since I got it because I noticed the same thing with the car reving freer and seeming more powerful with the 5w30 vs the 10W30 that the owner before me kept in the car.

Do you by any chance have a link to where I could find the listing where for back specked the engine for 5w20 because I've never heard that before, but if it really is safe to use then that would probably help my gas mileage a little bit which is really my only complaint in the car right now.

I don't have the link, but in a way, it doesn't matter - a 5w30 conventional will shear back to a 20-weight most of the time. Only advantage of a 5W-20 is perhaps a 'slightly' better basestock...

I'd just keep going with the YB 5w30. It's a great oil!
