Dad worked hard all his life at the DuPont refinery in Beaumont TX. After retirement Dad loved wood working in his spare time, he could build anything. So when it was time to buy he insisted on a long bed truck to haul 4x8 materials. After shopping around he found his perfect truck, a base model, long bed 1997 Chevy Cheyenne. Dad passed away in December 1999. The truck was still like new, and Mom did not want to let go of anything Dad owned. She soon stopped driving due to her health, but I kept her vehicles running. When Mom passed in 2007, I inherited them.

I drove Dads truck as a work vehicle from 2007 until 2015 when my son turned 16 and got his drivers licence. I thought it was great he drove his grandfathers truck, serving three generations. Dad would have been so proud. Time took its toll and repairs were needed although the Chevys 4.3L V6 powertrain remains excellent at 178K miles. My son really did need a newer, larger crew cab so we traded out Dads Chevy (+cash) for my 2018 Silverado.

I reconditioned the truck by 1) fixing the broke tailgate latch 2) fixing broke fuel tank level unit 3) clearing CEL's by replacing cat converter 4) installing new headlights, door locks, new carpeting over the vinal floor, adding a dashmat, and deep cleaning. It cost a few dollars but I am happy to see Dads truck fixed up and still happily motoring on. I get lots of unsolicted compliments out on the road, and even offers to buy.

I read it to mean the duties of the heirloom truck were taken over by a newer truck so the older one could be preserved.

Still, what a terrific and moving story!! One of the finest posts I’ve ever seen on here to be honest.

Not clear.
You traded in your Dad's Chevy for a 2018 Silverado, when your son was 19?
Yet you say you still own it?
No, I got rid of an old 2004 Chevy Avalanche and bought a 2018 Silverado from an individual. This was independant of my son was driving Dads truck. Later my son and I traded vehicles. I did not trade anything in.

Love it!!

I had a 1997 K1500, reg cab, short box, 4.3L, 4x4, 4L60E. Had that same exact interior/fabric/color. That was a great truck.
