Dad, I recommend that you replace your air filter.

(1992 Toyota Previa, 23,000 miles and 32 months on a dealer installed, Genuine Toyota Air Filter)

That looks just like the condition of my OEM Toyo Roki filter that I pulled from my car by the previous owner. Had all of those pine needles and debris, etc. Deja Vu

My dad's 92 Camry, same situation. Told him to replace the air filter but says its still clean. Obviously he was just lifted the cover of the air box and didn't even take the filter out. I changed it out and found the old filter (Toyota filter) plugged up with stuff, couldn't even see light through it. Car felt noticeable smoother with a new air filter.

I went through the same thing today. Dad thought that the air filter in the 2002 Ranger was just fine, with soot and dirt filling up the pleats. Mom said to replace it, so I did. Fram Tough Guard BTW. I swear that truck goes through air filters more than any other vehicle. It constantly sits in bad traffic, with a lot of big trucks around, and the air filter gets dirty quick. My truck, with the same air filter and air filter housing as the 2002 does not get nearly as dirty nearly as quick, but it is driven on rural roads with few other vehicles around.

I was at Pep Boys and Walmart today. Daddy said the air filter was fine and did not need a change.

PS: I think I'm going to sneak into Kragen and buy a new air filter and two quarts of gear oil before I take it into the shop for routine PM later this week.

My dad's as stubborn as yours is, it seems

He refuses to try anything other than 3k OCI's with his easy mostly highway driving, on a car that's leased. You'd think if you lease a car, you'd just go by the manufacturer's recommendation... -shrugs- not my money. My mom wised up and now lets me maintain her car, and gets her oil changes done right, for a fraction of the price, and I also change her air filter and all of those other maintenance things.

Two separate issues:
1) Father's car maintenance.
2) Father's expectations of what needs to be done.

You are on the right track. Attend to just one....

Well, I just went out, bought one, and installed it anyway. Fram CA6690 and $14.99 later, problem is solved.

My auto teacher said it needed to be changed (I had the van in the shop for a oil/filter, brake, trans, and differential fluid changes), so I justified myself that way. He bitched about the air filter price, but he got over it.

I remember one time I was putting in a new air filter in the Camry and my dad asked how much was it? I said its about $15 and he was surprised and said I thought they were a few dollars or something.

I guess some people only like to wait until their cars literally wait until it doesn't work and fix it. If it ain't broke don't fix it right? Yeah, I believe in preventative maintenance.
