I have a 2005 focus st with the 2.3 duratec engine and ford recommends that you use 5w20. To me this stuff seems extremely thin and is for mpg purposes only. I could be wrong. Are some 5w20 synthetics thicker than others when warm or should i just use a synthetic 5w30 from a major brand? Do some syns work better with the d23 motor? I know there will be many opinions on brand but basically wondering about what grade of oil.

5w20 is proven to be a great oil. Check out the various UOA and you will see that ALL (any brand) 5w20 oil will perform very well. If I were you, I would stick with 5w20 for the cold weather and gas MPG.
 
Almost everyone, myself included, assumes that 5w20 is too thin until you look at actual results. Motorcraft synthetic blend 5w20 is an excellent oil that has proven itself in actual use and in used oil analysis (there are many in the the used oil analysis section) and sells at Walmart for under $2/qt. It would be an excellent choice for your Ford.
 
I was also a 5w-20 skeptic until I saw used oil analysis like the ones linked above. Now, I use Mobil 1 5w-20 in my 2003 Honda with no worries.
 
i was the same way up until i came to this site. i remember pouring out a bottle of 5w20 and thinking water is thicker than this. but it appears they did something right with this 5w20 stuff. so use it with pride.
