Cycling is good for the brain.

You got to move, you got to move
You got to move, child, you got to move
But when the Lord gets ready
You got to move

You may be high, you may be low
You may be rich, child, you may be poor
But when the Lord gets ready
You've got to move

I've been cycling for 40+ years and have always known that getting outdoors in the fresh air & sunshine does at least as much for my mood & stress, as the exercise does for my body.

However in studies like the one posted, there are so many factors involved that it's quite difficult to tease out exactly which are causal versus confounding. Not that I care or that it matters, I love cycling and know it's good both mentally & physically.

Yes, many subtle and/or unknown variables were not/could not be considered. Pretty much like any study.

Also too, and I'm not shy to admit it, but at this stage of my life (age 72), riding my bike is the ONLY time I enjoy a total Zen - even when I'm gasping for air, blowing smoke, and leaking oil. :ROFLMAO:

Edit: I'm going to be riding the Laguna Seca race track on June 25th. Super looking forward to it.

I have been riding my bicycle to the office every day for the last two weeks. About 3 miles each way. It is amazing how comfortable a bike ride can be when it is over 100 degrees. I have an E bike, but I always pedal and keep the power at the minimum or off. I am also 72.
Awesome, keep it up!

When I was still working I had a 32 mile, hilly, round trip ride to work. My workplace had showers. I had a stressful job. What I found remarkable was that even though I had a crappy day at work, riding my bike home separated that crappy day from my home life.

FWIW,

your brain is essentially a blob of blood vessels, organic electric wiring, and cholesterol (not the cholesterol in the form everyone harps about in TV ads). anything to grow those vessels is good. As long as your not sucking down dirty exhaust while doing it, lol

With my autoimmune diseases, brain fog is a common symptom. Cycling is absolutely a way to relieve that brain fog. At least for a day. IQ goes up from 99 to 101 !!!! All kidding aside, it is far more effective at creating a situation for clear headed thinking than anything else I do. If I'm having luck with exercise, it takes about an hour to loosen up the muscles, get mental acuity back, and all is right with the world, if that makes sense.

I know we are all different, but on a long bicycle ride with heart rate about 130, I find it easy to conceive, design and layout an engineering project in my head. What ever that project might be. Generally turbine, high performance engine or similar.

I live a few miles from Road America for years this year is not open but used to be called fitness Wednesday you could use the entire facility to do whatever I’ve ridden many many miles on that track.
Side note Indy Car in town this weekend roads are getting crazy already.

Awesome! We have Laguna for 90 minutes on the 25th, 18:00 to 19:30. I don't plan on riding the entire time because it looks like there will be some bike stuff vendors there, but I'd like to get 7 or 8 laps in, about 15 miles worth.

Road America is one of my bucket list tracks I hope to visit one day.

I definitely feel better in the summer, worse in the winter. Too hard to cycle much in the winter, so much so that I gave up on winter riding long ago. :( Yes it can be done, but it's a lot more work than summer riding.

But I'm starting to notice that I crash a few hours after a good ride. I know I'm out of shape but the afternoon lull can be an outright crash if I bike too far in the morning.

I actually forgot (kinda sorta) how crappy I feel when I'm a blob. 4 weeks after surgery, absolute sack of cra.....crud......I'm thinking of throwing my leg over.......at least I was released to lift 30 pounds now. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhh

I was off the bike too long this year, and on my first ride, I didn't make it a mile before I was asking myself "do I even like riding?" not even a mile and everything was hurting. Thankfully the next ride was better!

At least you have surgery to blame--in my case, it's the beer and ice cream diet that I tend towards.

The older I get, the quicker I lose fitness during activity pauses and the longer it takes to earn it back. And I can't get away with eating the crap that I could when I was younger. Over the years this has motivated me to exercise more regularly and eat better. Retirement has made that easier.

THIS is the part that shocked me to the core

This is the part that I know and have been living.

Retirement takes away the "I don't have time" part - my wife called it an excuse. But it's real. A real job, two businesses, house, kids, church, life.......exercise? Wah?? But it's NOT just the "free" time it's a priority.

I'm noticing the same--I get a sugar rush from a cookie now. As a teen I could down a bottle of Mountain Dew and a Butterfinger, and feel nothing.

But retirement is so far off! 15 to 20 years, ugh. At least now my kids are done with high school and I don't have to live around their schedules anymore--any intrusions are much more infrequent. But work gets in the way of life, and life gets in the way of play...
