First time I have seen a bypass like this:

I got a used one of these too with 5k miles off my focus that I will be cutting open soon. Thanks for the pics.

Outstanding filter!! (Purolator)

"First time I have seen a bypass like this"

thats a threaded end BP thats what they look like when installed at the threaded end vs the dome end.

One of the neat things about OEM-spec filters. Although it's made by Purolator, it's done to Ford's specifications. Same thing with the Mopar MO-090 filter. The generic 14670 equivalent is just like any other Purolator Classic (still a good filter), but the MO-090 has a base-end coil spring bypass, just like the Motorcraft filters. Is it worth paying a few extra dollars for? I think so (especially in this case; you get the sillycone ADBV).

Top notch! I use the FL-820s and have to assume it is of similar construction. Thanks for posting.

Can you measure the following so the media area can be calculated?

1) Number of pleats
2) Pleat length
3) Pleat depth

Thanks ... looks nice, but would like to know the total media area also.

Thanks for these pics Texan. The FL400s is the first oversized Motorcraft filter I've used.

That's a lot of filter media for the money.

Although the thread end bypass on FL400s still baffles me. Was wondering if anyone knows how it works?

This is my filter size so I have the numbers, yet to try a FL400s but its on the list after my next OC of M1 0w-20 and M1209.

update

Pleat depth: .375 in
pleat length: 2.8 in
# of pleats: 63

pleat area: 132.3 sq in.

I also noticed this media looks more like the media in a P1 and not other Puro classics such as the Mann.

I thought the Focus takes a FL910S....Does the FL400S fit the Focus? I know its longer...........

FYI ... the Motorcraft FL-400S crosses over to the Purolator 20195. I run the PureOne PL20195 on my Tacoma V6, so will have to see how the media area compares between the two. FL-400S would probably be something I'd consider using on the Tacoma also.

I looked up what I measured the media area on the PureOne PL20195, and it came out to 157.5 sq-in. The bypass valve being on the threaded end of the FL-400S probably eats up some media room.

+1...I use the FL-820S on the F-150 5.4 and its replacement (FL-500S) on the Fusion 3.0. I have a lot of confidence in the quality of these made-by-Purolator-to-Ford-specs filters.

I like them too. Can you tell?

I put them on Toyota's instead of the shorter 3614. I don't have any of these new ones yet but have 3 or 4 of the longer ones. I really liked them when they were only about $2.87 at walmart. Now they are about $3.87 but still the best value.

+ one more. I use nothing but the FL820S on my Marauders and on my niece's '06 Fusion Duratec.

Thanks for the pix, Texan. It's good to see the innards to confirm they're still the best value on the market for a Ford engine.

The FL-400S has been my preferred filter for my 2008 Liberty.

But, I know they recently changed the design and shrunk the filter a bit. Besides the overall size, does anyone know what other spec's may have changed that may affect the performance or use on the Liberty?

I believe it still is listed as a cross/replacement for the '08 Liberty. But, I have Jeep's limited lifetime warranty and do not want to risk messing that up... just because of $3.69 filter.

Based on previous quotes by you I tried to fit an FL-400S on my wife's Toyota Yaris with 1NZ-FE engine. The gasket just makes it inside the filter plate and threads in fine, and I like having a filter with seemingly nearly double the capacity of the OEM filter on her car.
