I need a hitch to attach a bike rack to our 2018 Tiguan. Are Curtis hitches (~$140) decent for purpose?

I potentially latter may use to haul a small utility trailer after putting in VW electrical parts.

I just put one on my Jetta. They had both Curt and Draw-Tite. Ended up going down the Draw-Tite route since it was cheaper. They are almost identical though. I've use it to tow a small trailer when needed. Are the Tiguan's even spec'd to tow?

Yes, but not very much... there is even a VW hitch available.

There are several good threads on the 'TEX about the hitches and wiring.

Looked it up, interesting. They have the same tow rating as the manual transmission Jetta's.

If I use for towing it would be a neighbors small aluminum trailer 5 x 7 I can move about by hand. I would however have to purchase a $200+ wiring kit from VW

Right now just a bike rack.

If you mean a hitch assembly made by Curt, then yes, they work just fine. I've had several on previous vehicles and they all did the job for their intended purpose. Make sure you get the assembly that meets your requirements (trailer hitch reciever size, weight capacity, etc... - there are many options for some vehicles).

IIRC when I was researching this a while back the tow rating is 1500 lbs.

There are significant differences in appearance and the cutting of the bumper between brands.

I think I have a couple of Curtis hitches, would have to look. I buy from etrailer.com and just review the 2-3 options that they list. At least on the 2 or 3 installs I've done, there would be 2 or 3 different ones, with differing levels of effort required to install. I usually opted for the one requiring the least amount of effort.

Look into wiring harness while at it, you might not want it now but at least take a look at how hard it would be to wire one up. Sometimes you can get lucky and it's plug & play, other times you might need to some splicing.
