Hi

I recall when some old SL oils went to SM spec it was just a case of changing the label by the manufacturer.

Are there any current oils (GF-4) available on the market which are close to meeting the new GF-5 spec.

IMHO GF-5 is more stringent and has to pass more tests and requirements to that of GF-4 or even older specs (e.g. GF-3).

In other words: most GF-4 oil may pass or meet certain aspects of the GF-5 prerequisites but may still missing a lot of stuff, that's why they are GF-4 and not GF-5 (a lot of requirements for GF-5 are new, and not something that current GF-4 standard would offer).

Is that all the Synpower branded viscosities or is it just a select few ?

The main ones on the shop shelf in Australia are the 5w40 and 10w50 Synpower range.

Please quote the viscosity which are claimed to be close to GF-5.

Thanks Virginoil

Isn't GF-5 still in committee? There are some unresolved specs for E85 and mileage improving statements.

Yep, the GF-5 spec has not been finalized(the API and the automakers have alot of details to work out between a wish list and what is practicly achievable. In turn there is no oil that meets the spec.

My understandings exactly!

Cheers,

Any oil that currently meets ACEA, A5/B5 should also exceed GF-5 with little or no re-formulation.

Redline....it meets every spec. not even invented yet {always has,always will,just wait long enough and they will add it to their label}

Are these "recommended for" spec's or actual paid-for certs/approvals?

How do you know if it wasn't tested?

Since GF-5 places such a heavy emphasis on deposit protection and reduces volatility, especially in turbocharged applications, I'd think Synpower would be one of the least likely to pass GF-5 since it won't even pass that tuff Acura/Honda volatility/deposit test.

You're barking up the wrong tree. RL never say they meet anything and in fact they don’t.

HT0-06, 4718M and ACEA A5/B5 rated oils are probably GF-5 or so close to it there's no practical reason to consider it not GF-5.

In other words, Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum.
