Current ATF fluid choices for 97 Subaru Outback?

Any blend or synthetic universal or multivehicle ATF are your choices.

Toss the owners manual in the trash.

Probably an Aisan transmission and they liked DEXRON-III. Wally has it in a yellow GALLON jug which will be the amount that will drain out, If you've got a top-sider, use it as there's no difference vs. draining. Just be sure your model isn/t one w/ CVT.

Subaru always sourced transmissions from Jatco, but a good Dex/Merc or universal should do the trick.

The manual does call for DEX-III. I have drained and refilled every 15K with DEX-III and for being a '97, it only has 88,000 miles on it. I was wondering if DEX-III is outdated lubrication technology and if there is something "better" that would be compatible that I could use.

Is there such a thing as a sythetic DEX-III?

thanks,

Carl

You could look into dex VI, from what others have said it is backwards speced for dex-III and can be had in a synthetic. From what others have posted dex VI has to be at least a semi synthetic blend to meet the requirements of the spec.
