My in-laws have a 1996 3/4 ton Ram sitting in their pasture with a dead 5.9L Magnum gas engine. My wife an I are looking for a decent farm truck and they said they would practically give us the truck and all we would need to do is put a new engine in it.

Now I could just get another 5.9L gas engine but of course I'd rather put the diesel engine in it while I'm in there. Can anyone tell me the likely difference in cost of putting a gas vs. diesel engine in it? It is looking to me like the diesel will cost a lot of money but maybe I'm missing something.

For the money of swapping the 12v in you could build a decent 360ci and rebuild the tranny too. If you swap a 12v you'd have to swap the whole drvietrain from the diesel along with exhaust intake intercooler.

Yeah that is what its looking like. I guess I'm over the Cummins swap. I can't seem to find too many decent 5.9l gas engines for under $3000 though. Jeez.

Any auto parts store should be able to order you a rebuilt gas engine. I'm seeing several for under $1,500.

I have thought about that but haven't looked into it much. Would the 5.2 and 5.9 bolt up to the same auto trans easily? I'm a Ford guy. I don't know much about Mopar.

if they are like they used to be there are a few minor differences from a 360, and a 318. but they can be over come. i swapped a 360 in a 1982 ram that had a 318. a v-12? not unless you that kind of swap all the time. but dont go overboard on the camshaft. unless its a street racer limit the cam to .430-.450 lift, 268-273 degrees duration this is full, allso called advertised, not at .05 lift. it will get 20-25 more hp but not use more fuel. i had one in a 413 chrysler.

The 318 and 360 are the same engine family. Same bell housing pattern. The older ones used a slightly different dr side motor mount and the oil pans were different at the rear. I put a 318,340 and 360 in my Plymouth Duster at one time or another and all 3 were a straight bolt in.

I have not goofed with the newer ones but I'd assume they are simmilar.

All have one mount different. Replacing a 360 with a 318 will require a 318 flexplate, harmonic damper, & torque converter...the 360 has a balance weight, the 318 does not.

What I would love to do, is find a nice F-250 with a dead 6.0 powerstroke in it and put a Cummins in that bad boy! That would be an awesome truck! I'd call it a Fummins, lol!

I just looked out my window and saw one!

People have already done it. In fact there is a website dedicated to other people who have made the swap:
