24hp Kohler smokes on cold start; cause?

Cub Cadet XT2 Enduro Series 7000 series 24 HP Kohler smoked on cold start, first time could a dirty air filter cause this?

What color, and how long did it smoke? Did it clear up?

The smoke was blue, smelt like oil. Cleared up in 30 seconds and runs fine

More than likely oil seeping past the rings. Especially if the machine is not perfectly level or over filled. Had this issue with a former Kohler.

Thank you very much. It runs great so I think tune up, oil & filter change. I still live in the 14 HP Flathead Kohler with points so nice to know there is a answer for twin overhead valve engines.

What oil and grade you running

My Kohler Command 12.5 in a 1993 John Deere STX38 riding mower does this same thing intermittently.

I believe it was the anti-drain back of the oil filter letting oil rise in the sump while sitting (similar to being overfilled) and leaking past the rings or valve stem seals.

or maybe the random spot in the cylinder that the piston sits, may be worn and letting oil pass by the rings while sitting.

An oil change with a new filter seemed to resolve this for me.
