A friend of mine has a CC with a 1 cylinder Kohler. She has it regularly serviced every fall or spring. Recently after totally warmed up, it occasionally misses and then stalls; it does not appear to be load related. It immediately restarts too. One time it backfired thru the muffler which the manual indicated a "lean condition" (I would have thought rich) Other than the stalling, the engine runs like a top.

Q:Do these engines need mixtures constantly adjusted thru the season? Is a backfire really an indication of too lean?
I'm thinking the air filter might be clogged or maybe there is a fuel filter. Anyone have some experience with this?

Sounds like you need to check the coil. My 14hp kawasaki did the same thing. New coil fixed it. Let us know how it turns out. Good Luck.

Kohlers tend to be super sensative to fuel filter type. Dunno why exacty, but I've seen fuel starvation happen to kohlers running aftermarket fuel filters. Another cause could be a plugged gas cap vent, or failing fuel pump that starts to warp/leak when the engine warms. Best bet is to try to determine if this is fuel or spark related.
