Kids crv popped this code today. I pulled the intake (what a pain!) but the valve seems to turn ok, and really did not have gunk on it. Oil yes, hard or thick deposits no. I couldn’t get a vacuum pump onto the valve to test it, but it seem to hold vacuum if i turn it, block the line and let it spin.

How clean does this need to be? I’m guessing it might be the sensor that reads position instead.

(I am likely done on this one and will give to the local garage to diagnose instead, no diag tools here. Just looking for thoughts before I give up.)

Forgot to take any. Wanted to put back together while i remembered how it came apart.

With current prices on labor I wonder if it's cheaper to just go ahead and replace it yourself. Chances are the shop will have to replace it anyways, but you already got some knowledge and experience to do it.

Looks like the vid I watched.

I suppose it is just a couple more hours to tear apart and try again. Now that I know how it comes a apart (mostly).

Watching video again. Mine was about same condition, maybe a bit less oil on it, and it did toss the code after a recent cold snap. So it lines up. Perhaps just hosing it down with brake cleaner is all it needs. That and maybe an oil change, it's been a couple of years (but only 2k) and it may be an oil burner. Maybe I should spring for a PCV valve while at it, I was going to change last summer but when I saw I had to remove this radiator support I said "nah". In there again, might as well I guess. Can't seem to find gaskets locally though, they aren't bad but they didn't look great either.

I attempted to turn the screws holding the position sensor but those aren't turning (who's idea to use Philips here???).

And that manifold does not just pop out! Maybe if I remove the coolant overflow bottle it would.

Came back yesterday, not surprised, not with the cold snap we're having. BUT now that it's emissions-exempt... I'm not sure I "have to" fix. Although, come to think of it, it does have inspection this month, and maybe it does have to pass one more time... doah!

Will wait for warmer weather before touching! Could not have been that bad of a job last time, however, I know I need order intake manifold gaskets, and IIRC they are a mail-order item. Bummer, but I guess I have fair warning.
