Crazy prices on amazon

I have to wonder is there is some money laundering scheme using amazon. Check out this oil price. What's up with that?

sometimes I think they up the price to keep an account active till they have more to sell. I see some wide prices on items I keep in my wish list

Have to agree with "Bioburner". It's basically just holding a listing spot. Keeps everything active until they acquire more product to sell.

That definitely happens in some cases... keeps them showing up in searches, especially if they have a good position on the first page or two. I believe eBay sellers do this a lot to keep their "number sold" count from getting reset.

Also, a lot of Internet stores including third party sellers (and Amazon themselves) use programs to monitor prices and adjust based on what their competitors are doing. If no limits are set, they can go very high (or low) as these programs get into price wars with each other.

In this case I have to wonder if it is a typo, as there's another listing of the same product for $40.xx, and one for helix ultra 5w-40 for $36.yy.

The keeping it active is just as plausible, however, there have been occasions where items I've had set up to repeat buy on subscribe and save have gone up 10x, yet been in stock, readily available to ship...

That's probably what they're doing although can [censored] customers off in the process, and they may move elsewhere for their purchase.

I doubt it. Prices are to good on Amazon, Free shipping and 2 day delivery free. And subtract another 5% if you have the Amazon CC. I used to compare stuff on ebay. I no longer bother. Ebay sucks compared to Amazon Prime.

I think prices USED TO be good on Amazon.

Just this week I was looking for a water filter for our camper for camping season. Camco TastePure was $17.58 on Amazon. Walmart in store $17.58. No advantage to Amazon as we pay sales tax in PA.

Needed a pre-filter for our Honeywell air filter - $7.99 Amazon. $7.99 at our local Walmart.

IMHO Amazon is not the value it used to be and Prime is a borderline scam. As much as I hate Walmart I'd rather get my stuff today and support "local" businesses as the various WalMarts employ more of my neighbors than Amazon.

Yeah, I use ACE HARDWARE or local hardware back home. Amazon is a joke anymore. My cousin works for Wal Mart in theft and fraud department and loves it

That's not amazon selling the oil, it's some other 3rd party selling the product through amazon. Maybe theyr'e hoping someone will pay that insane price by mistake or something.

Amazon, for me, isn't about finding the cheapest price, it's about saving me time.

It's 20-25 minutes each way to our nearest Walmart. Add in a bit of parking, and I'm at an hour if I know exactly what I want.

Ignoring the cost of operating a car for twenty miles (which isn't zero) - if Amazon has the same item for the same price, I've just saved an hour. I pay sales tax on both, and with Prime, I don't pay shipping. It's apples-apples.

Case in point: I needed two jugs of Mobil 1 0W40 for the Mercedes.

Amazon price $25.47.

Wal-mart price $25.57

Here's the irony; I drove to Walmart so that I could start the job the same day. Thus costing me an hour and negating my logic above. but they were out of the 0W40 and I left empty handed!

So, I ordered from Amazon, and once again, buying local cost me an hour.

I order things from Amazon about 100 times a year. Books, gun-cleaning supplies, tools, movies, even car parts and household items. If I know exactly what I want, I've saved quite a bit of my time, and at the cost of $1 when amortizing my Prime membership.

The Walmarts in my area have 30 customers trying to check out, but only 5 registers open.
That's why I go to Walmart early during the weekdays and get what I need and out in 5 minutes with the self check out registers.

With Amazon ease it doesn't pay to shop regularly at Walmart.
