Let me start off by saying that I'm looking for a mower that self-propels faster than a casual walk. My current Craftsman is a 2001 non-variable speed 22" with a 6.75 HP Tecumseh. It's quite a nice mower but is just too slow. I'm interested in a new Craftsman 22" variable speed front wheel drive mower with a B&S 6.75 HP engine. (It's currently on sale in the Craftsman club catalog, page 9, part # 37443). I would like to know how "fast" it moves (not cuts) at full speed. Is it a brisk walk or is it about the same as my current model?

The bad thing about a department store is that you can't say let me try the speed. Some smaller yard equipment shops will let you take a test drive. My opinion?

I think I found my answer on the Toro website. Their front drive variable speed models max out at 3.1 MPH where as their rear drive models max at 4.8 - huge difference.

When I was looking for a new mower, all I could find that day that appealed to me was Honda Harmony self-propelled mulching mower. To me it is faster than other I looked at but there are not sears stores here.

It was pricey (mid $400) but I am glad I got it. Makes my old Craftsman seem like a 79 dollar walmart special.
