cracked exhaust manifold?

Hi, I think I may have a leak or a crack on or around my exhaust manifold. Car is 94 honda accord, 137k miles.

The reasons I think theres a problem are:

When I seafomed my car, smoke came from under the manifold cover.

My car makes a ticking noise at higher rpms, coming from somewhere in the engine bay.

If I rev the car in neutral, it sounds kinda loose in the area, dont know how else to say it, makes like a backfiring noise.

Muffler is loud, but it looks to be in good shape.


Im going to look at it when I get the time, but are there any hazards to having a cracked exhaust manifold? Like do I lose any power, or can I harm the engine? Ill replace anything broken just for the sake of having a quiet car, just wondering if it should be fixed sooner or later.

a friend busted the exhaust manifold on his old grand marquis. Telltale sign? a tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat when driving on the highway...

I think the major hazard would be the potential for exhaust gases, especially carbon monoxide, to get into the passenger compartment.

Sorry but your manifold did NOT crack cause you added Seafoam. You could of used 10 bottles of Seafoam and thats not gonna cause it to crack.

The Civic is also known for cracking exhaust manifold around 100K miles. My wifes 98 Civic had your same problem.

You could burn out a valve if you run your engine to long with a maifold leak !

Haha, no need to be sorry, I know seafoam didnt cause it, just saying I could see smoke come out from the manifold when I used it, which means to me theres a leak somewhere.



Im gonna look at it this weekend, anyone know if they're hard to replace or not?

theyre easy to replace. just soak all the fasteners in pb blaster or another type of penetrating oil the day before. buy a new gaskets and if you can swing it, buy new fasteners.

Its easy to replace.

The whole job took me 3 hours to remove the Oxygen sensor, the heat shield , the exhaust manifold bolts and finally the 3 bolts that connect the manifold to the catalytic converter.......and install a new Felpro gasket and new manifold.

I don't know how bad your manifold is cracked, but if you do alot of city stop and go traffic.....

you might get a headache from the carbon monoxide that seeps into the interior.

Your manifold can be easily removed because the nuts seldom ever sieze.

You better replace the manifold or you'll start to fine your mileage going lower per tank. The additional oxygen taken in by negative reversion will fool the 02 sensor into thinking your running lean. You'll start to get a rich condition out your tailpipe.
