cougar front brake caliper

today i wanted to remove my front calipers to get my rotors turned. i have never had the brakes off so this was my first time really looking at them. what i saw was that only one bolt was visible. where the other bolt should be is a rubber boot covering the entire thing. it feels like something is under it but i don't want to cut it apart if i don't have to. the bolt that i could see had a torx head. i had a breaker bar on that and couldn't get it to budge. i didn't want to go any further in case it was reverse thread.

so if any ford guys see this or anyone that has dealt with these style calipers before can give me some advice that would be great. the car is a 1995 cougar. disc in the front, drum in the back.

Buy a Haynes manual. It shows it all.

Go to Rock Auto and look up the brake parts, they have pictures.
It is not left handed thread but one is different that the other.

+1 on a manual. Should be able to pick up a used manual cheap on EBAY given the age of the vehicle.

You should not need to cut anything rubber. Spray the bolt you cannot get off with PB Blaster.

There are almost certainly two bolts that need to come off. One in the top 3rd and one in the bottom 3rd. Most likely the same style head unless one was replaced.

Since you are working backwards make sure you are really loosening the bolt. Sometime try and tighten it a smidgen to break the rust, then loosen.

Don't be surprised if the rotor cannot be turned. The throw away thickness is not that much thicker than new. Most people get new rotors. Decent ones can be bought for $30-$40.

Rotors (almost) never really warp. They become of non uniform thickness due to pad material buildup or uneven wear of the rotor. But everyone says "warped rotor" when they feel pulsation in the brake pedal.

On more than a few Ford cars, there is just one bolt, usually on the bottom. You pivot the caliper up and slide it off the top stud to remove it.

Yes the picture shows it has one bolt and the other looks like a stud.

thank you for the answer. that is what it looked like to me on the pictures at advance auto. i guess i'll just have to get some heat to get that bottom bolt out.
