Costco Member Privileges and Conditions

Disagree. The employee was doing her job by following orders. The cleaned carts were literally 10 feet away and were marked. Everyone was following instructions except this guy, who chose to be rude to her. She was just doing her job and was polite throughout.

The Costco employees around here, and there are a lotta Costcos, are happy and helpful. Very helpful. There is an entry door guy, David, who I give friendly flak to about his beloved Cowboys, and he returns the joking about the 49ers in kind. He's a great guy.
Well, that basket likely wasn’t going to spread covid - but did you hear about billt’s elevator incident? - it can cause that !

I said nothing about the rude customer. Just because some jerk is himself doesn’t give an employee the right to tell a customer not to shop there. Not there function. That’s managements job.

Any public facing job deals with jerks all day. If they can’t handle it they should find new profession.

Costco Warning: Do not order a pizza on Superbowl Sunday! The pizza line will be around the block! I made that mistake a couple years ago. When visiting, the first thing I do before entering the store is order a pizza, then pick up before hitting the parking lot for home. No line when ordering, but picking up...wow! I barged to the front of the line, presented my receipt that showed that I ordered almost an hour earlier, and the counter dude handed me my pizza. Thank goodness!

Costco pizza is surprisingly very good! It’s better than a lot of the big chain pizza shops up here and way better price too (a good 25-30% better)

Not sure if he’s still there, but there was a guy working at the Costco in Santa Clara with a clear motor function disability. Despite that, he often worked checkout and was remarkably good at it even though it looked like he’d have problems with the keypad. And he was pleasant where some customers addressed him by name and clearly sought him out.

No. The customer was the bad guy, by a country mile. Would he have ragged on her if he were a man? She was never rude, just doing her job. With a nice smile and greeting customers, by the way.

She told him the fresh carts, that shoppers were sourcing from, were literally 10 feet away and closer to the entrance. There were signs as well. She was cleaning the carts returned from the parking lot.
How do you know she wasn't a store manager and/or was not following her instructions? She carried herself in a 100% professional manner, never rude. Just instructional.

Personally I applaud employees like her. What right does anyone have to be a jerk?

I can't comment on Sams because I can't fathom paying money just to enter a Walmart owned store.
This is exactly why I dropped my Sams membership almost 20 years ago. Perhaps things have changed since then, but when I used to shop Sams Club, I felt I was buying the same Walmart quality, but just in larger quantity. The product quality difference between Sams and Costco, particularly in meats, produce and bakery, is, or was, night and day. YMMV.

You just epitomized why I hate Costco employees. A low level employee at a publicly traded company has no business telling a customer they don't have to shop there - right or wrong. Thats managements job. She should have been fired or sent to customer service training but likely was not.
You have shared a few times that you don't like Costco employees. Not my experience. I consider Costco employees to be in that top tier of retail employees, right up there alongside Chick-Fil-A and In-N-Out. They are courteous, friendly and personable, at every Costco I have ever been to.

The example that @JeffKeryk shared was during the pandemic. I would have been among those applauding her.

Their claim that they check your receipts to make sure you weren't charged twice for items not because they think your a thief is an insult to everyone's intelligence.
Actually twice with a cart with not many items the receipt checker staff caught that I had double scanned a few items and thus overpaid. I am impressed that it was caught and saved me a few bucks.

Many people get upset at employees doing their jobs and take their angers out on them. I try my best to stay professional and just ask for their supervisors with more authority to get things done, and most of the time things go well.

The only exception is when I met an outsourced to India staff online keep telling me that they would do the same and not give me what I want, and refuse to do that. It is almost like the opposite of customers taking their angers out on the staffs. For those who prevent me from asking for a supervisor when I am polite, I usually leave a negative review on the survey. I am just asking for something from people with more authority, why do they have to be so butt hurt about it?

You mean some other stores can give better prices and more convenience? Novel thought.

The issue is NOT showing a card for a membership store. It’s the slowing you down and NOT improving processes to make it faster and more convenient. Creating longer lines, with bigger crowds, more hassle. This really isn’t a hard concept.

I scratch my head why anyone would want to justify a worse shopping experience that takes longer and is more of a hassle. But that’s just me.
If this helps, you are applying your experience across the country. I can accept the stores you patronize have issues. My wife and I have never had those issues at two locations each, in SC and one in NC. For both Sams Club and Costco.

No idea what the "Novel thought" comment is about. If it's sarcasm those things just fly over my head not understanding.

Where did I ever say the customer was not a jerk. Your mis construing the situation.

Had you told the guy to quit being a jerk I would have applauded you. But you don’t work for Costco.

It’s not customer service’s role to be someone’s mother. Clearly this concept is lacking.

The reason for scanners at the entrance is to avoid the riff raff with Gold Star membership trying to sneak in during Executive member hours. They tried the special executive member hours without the scanners and gold stars would whine and make excuses to get in. The person at the entrance can now just tell them the scanner said you wait:LOL:

I’ll add another fun little anecdote to this thread.

We went to Costco for gas tonight as my wife and I were going out. We wanted to check tire pressures since the car had sat a while. I had to go to the bathroom, my wife was going tire pressures and adding nitrogen.

This thread in the OP talks about going in the exit. Even though I could have since the bathroom is over that way, I went in the normal way, waited behind a few folks, scanned in.

Now here’s the thing. I don’t carry a Costco card or the cc. My wife had hers. I took hers and walked in. I scanned it, and the guy said go on in. Very welcoming. The photo on the cc is my wife’s.

Then I decided I wanted to buy some vitamin c on the way out. Again, only had her cc. Scanned it, let me check out.

So if they’re verifying anything, I’m not sure what it is…. If I can go in and buy something while using a card with a photo of my wife, they’re not checking much.

Of course I had to wait on the way out to get my receipt marked up for one item. So that worked.

When are the Kirkland police officers going to come to arrrest me for a bad transaction, and unverified walking around in the store??!?

If you have a family card then both cards have the same number. So it may have matched your pic with the number in their database?

Or it’s all just behavior training 🤣
