Correct fluid for transfer case?- 2001 Nissan

I assumed it was gear oil (owners manual is next to useless) so I picked up two quarts of M1 75w-90.

Oddly enough the fluid I drained looks thin like ATF, and did not have the nasty gear oil smell.

I put in the 75w-90 anyways (had to put something in there). Does anyone know what the correct fluid is for this application (2001 Fronter 3.3L Supercharged V6, Auto)? Can ATF be an option for transfer cases? If I used the worng fluid, will I do any harm by using it for a short period before I am able to redrain and refill?

Nissanmatic D ATF is correct for the transfer case. They say you can use Dexron III as a substitute
Were it mine, I'd change it, using a good synthetic.

FWIW, Nissan Patrol's comes out with either ATF or 75W-90 in the t/case. It appears that manual trans vehicles used gear oil and auto's ATF.
Most chain drive t/cases use ATF.

Yep, Nissan uses both ATF and GL4 gearoil in their x-cases, even in the same year vehicle. Some owners like to match the fluid to the transmission, in case there is some seal leakage and mixing.

So, NO HARM DONE. IMO, gears like thicker gear oil. But, your cold weather might prefer something thinner or a good synthetic.

I prefer MTFs and MTLs in place of ATFs in simple mechanical x-cases.
