The best way to approach this is to buy new OEM drums and brake shoes, '323.

He got a lot of miles (kilometers) out of the originals. That should tell you something.

When it comes to brakes, don't bother with aftemarket stuff or trying to "fix" things with turning or re-machining. It's not worth it, IMO.

Depends what "slight grooves" means.
The rear shoes will have matching "slight grooves" and everything should work well. I have a '98 Corolla with 160, 000 km and there is still lots of life left in the original rear shoes.
Why did your friend take his car to the mechanic in the first place ??

I've found that the stock shoes and pads are pretty hard and cut into the rotors or drums by the time they're worn out. Get the drums turned and get the cheapie relined shoes at the parts store. Remember that the shoe with the short lining goes to the front. I did that for my 2002 Cavalier and it worked out well. The relined shoes actually seem to stop the car better.

Hi all

A friend of mine has a 2004 Corolla with about 94 ooo km and his mechanic notified him that his rear drums have slight groves on them.

His question is, should he get these machined out?
If yes, should he also get new pads for the rear. He was told that he should because the drums with the groves have left groves on the rear pads.

Well that's it. Any advice anyone has would really be appreciated.

I'd get new aftermarket drums [they are very reasonable], and a decent set of shoes [pads?], not the cheapest ones available.
