Cordless Electric Mowers

I have been using a cheap Lowe's house brand corded 18" corded electric mower for my small yard for ten years. I got tired of the general lack of reliability of gas powered mowers, at least the ones in my price range. The only maintenance required has been annual blade sharpening and replacing the extension cord twice. It is quiet, reliable, and mulches well. I have been thinking for a long time about a Li-Ion powered mower since I have been using a battery powered string trimmer and blower for about six years. But, I was always concerned about run time, especially when the grass gets high on those rare occasions when we get a week of rain. My grass is Bermuda which doesn't tend to clump under the deck too badly. I like the idea of this mower with dual blades and an option to have an extra battery on deck to switch over if the first one gets too low.

So, I'm wondering if any of you have tried this mower, or if you have had luck with any other cordless models. The total size of my lot is about 6,000 sf and with the house and flat work subtracted I probably have about 3,000 sf of grass to cut. It takes about 30-40 minutes with the corded mower, which again, is 18" wide and has a cord to mess with.

My dad had an Ego mower that worked pretty well. I used it a few times on their yard in Florida when they lived there. Their grass was Bermuda also I think. You definitely had to take it slow, and you had to watch your cutting height because it would bog down even with a moderate cut depth. If your grass grows fast, you'll need to be out at least once a week, or cut it twice each time, with different deck heights.

It took him about 20 minutes total to mow all of his grass, so you can imagine how much grass he had. Very small lots -- retirement community type situation. I wouldn't consider the mower for much more grass than he had. It's just not powerful enough for larger jobs.

I bought the 16" version of the Greenworks for my son who has a very small yard. His 11 and 13 y.o. daughters can easily handle it. For a small job it's ideal. They liked it so much they bought the trimmer which uses the same battery.

I figure if I get the 19" I can cut the yard in less time. Going from years of using a 21" gas mower to the 18" electric took some adjustment. I ran over the cord twice in the first season. Eventually, the cord will get a short or it will wear through in several places just from getting dragged around. 100' 14 gauge cord shave gotten up around $40 these days. I don't think the mower will ever wear out, though. But, I thought I might treat myself to a cordless one - IF they perform decently.
