We always put our ATs in neutral at stoplights, etc. Never needed a rebuild, and have three over 200k miles and one just creeping up on 200k right now. I prefer the feel of sitting with the vehicle in neutral, rather than the driveline torqued and impeded at the brakes.
Daimler did a study a while back that determined that 30 seconds stopped was the minimum time that would yield a benefit if the engine was turned off... i.e. it takes roughly 30 seconds worth of fuel consumption at idle to equal that required for startup.
I recall they updated the figures for modern engines to 45 seconds.
UPS, a company VERY concerned about bottom line, has ther drivers turn off the engines at every stop. Is this because of bottom line effects of someone stealing the vehicle, or the wasted fuel vs. starter wear?
