Hello,

I'm trying to decide on the set of tires for Ford Explorer XLT 2010, R17. Just found that Costco has Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra and also came across tirerack.com and found they recommend Cooper Endeavor Plus and also have Continental Crosscontact LX25.

Does anyone have an opinion or experience with either of these tires?
Thank you

I've been happy with Alenza AS Ultra on a vehicle, about 16,000 miles on them so far. They started off a little loud on some roads, but that wore off after 1000 miles or so. They have been quiet, comfortable, and good in the rain.

I was a big Bridgestone / Firestone fan for many years. In fact, still have a few sets on my cars today. My parents proudly worked for them for 30-40 years. They aren’t what they used to be. All of mine have either dry rotted, cracked, or started to have tread separation in less than 2 years / 20k miles. I love the weatherpeaks, but I will not be going back until they fix their issues.

I have used the LX-25s. I highly recommend them. I just ordered another set to be installed on the Mazdaratti this Saturday. Quiet, excellent grip, good wear.
Thank you, did you order from tirerack and installed them locally? Can any shop install your own, would they do that?

Ohm, wow, so they still have that propensity. tendency to have problems? What do you prefer now?

Right now, I have Continental Crosscontact Sports, Firestone Weathergrips, and Bridgestone Weatherpeaks. All my vehicles will move to either Pirelli, General, Falken, or Yokohama. Those are the brands I have a preference for at this moment in time.

My three vehicles are a '23 Blazer, '17 Spark, and '19 Camry Hybrid. The Blazer will get General RT45s. The Spark will be getting either Yokohama or Falken Sincera. The Camry will get either General RT45s or Pirelli Cinturato Weatheractive.

The Continentals have about 26k miles and 6.5/32 tread, no signs of cracking or tread separation.

The Weathergrips are on a '17 Spark, that weights next to nothing. They are around a year old, only about 10k miles, and will get replaced very soon. The tread is good, but the tread separation is starting to be a cause of concern.

The Weatherpeaks have been an exceptional tire, they saved my life once during a snow storm when a semi came into my lane, didn't see me, ran me off the road and I would've hit a bridge and gone into a creek if I didn't gain traction back so quick. They have the slightest amount of outer tread cracking, no concern however.

Over the years, I have had Firestone Destinations, Bridgestone Ecopias, Firestone Fuel Fighters, and a few others. They all perform well, but dry rot or crack way too early. My last set of Destinations had about 50k miles, still had about 5/32 tread, but were very dry rotted.

It seems like, unless you get the very best, the most expensive tire, from either Firestone or Bridgestone, they are not worth it. I even get a sizeable discount on them, but would rather pay the extra for tires that will not crack or rot.

Are all these 3 tires equally capable in rain, light snow, and noise levels or Alenza Ultra only can handle winter driving?

Thank you For the comprehensive reply definitely. appreciate the background information. Yes, it is really important to have a good set of tires like you had Weatherpeaks tires.

Are you ordering on a website through tirerock and having them install locally, would any shop would do that?
For Ford Explorer, which one would you have picked??

I try my best to first go through DiscountTire since I have one near me. TireRack offers a service where they will ship tires to a preferred installer for free, which is pretty nice. If you live in a big metropolitan area, I know DiscountTire offers a mobile installation service.

The Continentals you have listed are very similar to the ones I have on my '23 Blazer, good tire, very quiet. So, out of those three, that would be my choice. I know people who have Cooper and they are a solid, no frills tire. You can't go wrong with either of those.

Thank you, do Contententals handle light snow or ice. I'm not going skying but here in the PNW, we do get frosts.

Just went on discount tire website and they do not have Continentals, they have
MichelinDefender LTX M/S245 /65 R17 107T SL BSW
PirelliScorpion AS Plus 3245 /65 R17 107H SL BSW
BridgestoneDueler LX245 /65 R17 107T SL BSW
NittoRidge Grappler245 /65 R17 111T XL BSW

Any of these are worthy?

Discount tire actually has ContinentalCross Contact LX 25245 /65 R17 107T SL OWL . I searched for them but in the original results output after I enter my car's specs, it did not show.

Here is the TireRack's SUV tire test of 8 tires...At least 2 tires of which you listed in your OP.
I hope this video works(will play) and helps you in your decision.
It's about 22 min. long, with winter tire testing as well.
I brought up the LX25 just to get to the video. But, you could bring up any of the tires listed to get the video.
You'll have to scroll down to get to the video.

Just bought a set of Cooper Endeavor Plus for my Mitsubishi yesterday at the local DT. Have a set of these tires on my Ford Edge too. The Cooper CS5s on the Mits right now were worn to 4/32 with only~35K. Went to DT to see if they would prorate for another set of Coopers. They did and also gave me a military discount. Right now Cooper is giving a $50 rebate too. I figure mounted and balanced these 225/55/18 tires will cost me 85$ each. Will get them installed tomorrow.

Cooper makes good tires and at these prices I got lucky.

I’ve had good luck with them. In light snow they do good. I ordered them through discount tire (who owns tire rack) and they get installed tomorrow AM. I’ve had them before on a Hyundai Tucson and I simply loved them on it.
