Coolant for my 02 7.3 Diesel Ford PS

I need to change out my coolant and I know it needs to have the coolant contain the proper SCA level.

Couple of my Diesel friends and one mechanic says I can install Prestone ELC as long as I add the additive from Ford that will bring the coolant up to the SCA level that I need.

I do have the test strips to maintain the SCA level,, I already have enuf Prestone concentrate for the change.

Can any harm come from doing this,,,

No, SCA must be used with conventional green low silicate antifreeze.

Mixing SCAs with the wrong type of antifreeze can create a mess.

I would recommend you get a precharged antifreeze such as Fleet Charge.

understand though that there are two different types of SCA those being DCA-2 and DCA-4 and both require their own test strips.

Fleet Charge uses DCA-2 and you can get it at tractor Supply, Napa and oreillys.

The test strips napa sells and the Napakool SCA additive are also both DCA-2

The liquid additive Ford sells is DCA-4. Fleetguard makes precharged coolant that is DCA-4 but its not as easy to find. You would have to go to a commercial truck dealer most likely to find it.

Does your prestone look like this:

and does the bottle say meets Cat EC-1, Cummins 14603 or Navistar B-1? If so you don't need any additional SCA's for that coolant.

If you ran a conventional green coolant then yes but not a ELC meeting Cat EC-1 and the other specs noted above.

Today I bought my 4 gal of Fleet Charge,, I did not know about the two kinds of SCA Iam glad I did post the issue on here or I would have messed things up. I did purchase my test strips at O'Riley and I will look on the container to see if they are for DCA-2.

You all have my big Thanks for the help on this,,, I will be ordering a coolant filter to install when I change the coolant over to the Fleet Charge.

I does not,,,it is the yellow jugs,,,,I will take the ones I bought back to walley World for a return and I bought the Fleet Charge from Tractor Supply to replace the wrong coolant.

You didn't HAVE to return the conventional prestone, it and some sca's would have worked fine too. But fleet charge is good stuff as well.
