I put a Tefba filter on my Cadillac STS, thinking it may help to prevent damage from build up of Dexcool sludge. Don't know if it did any good because the Northstar head gasket went at around 100K miles as it typical and I scrapped the car. The filter did collect a small amount of junk, probably nothing the water pump wouldn't have been able to chop up.
I had a filter on a car for 10 years. When I sold the car the inside of the header tank on the radiator was still shiny like when the car was brand new. It still had the original water pump and hoses. I used distilled water, zinc chromate, water pump lubricant and a little bit of anti-freeze. I think the zinc chromate is illegal to use now but the filter sure kept things clean.
Back around 1990 or 1991, the VW Passat had a spin on coolant filter located right on the radiator. Only lasted one year. No idea why they got rid of it. I worked in the parts department of a VW/Toyota dealer at the time.
Another good idea that did not pan out was my 1992 Toyota Camry V6 which had a hydraulic cooling fan. Used the same hydraulic fluid from the power steering reservoir. Worked great. Only used it a year or two as they returned to the electric fan in later years. Note this was only for the V6. The I4 always had electric fans. I had two 1992 Camrys. A V6 and an I4.
