Getting ready to do a flush and fill on the Mazda, so I was paging through the owners manual. It lists the cooling capacity for the V6 as only 9 quarts. Is it just me or does that seem low? I'd think the radiator would take a good portion of that alone, not to mention coolant passages in the engine, hoses, heater core, and overflow tank.

Nope, sounds about right to me. Radiator should take up more than half the total so you can acheive at least a 50% concentration using full strength AF and distilled water.

JRed, I notice that you use HDEO in your 2006 Subaru. Do you have emissions testing in Virginia? If so are you not risking damaging the expensive cat in your car and having to replace it by using HDEO?

VA only has emission testing in Northern Virginia , and it is done on OBDII vehicles using a scan tester. They stopped using the smog tester a few years ago on 96+ cars and trucks but use the smog test on pre OBD II cars.

That's more than 2 gallons.
Cars are designed to use less and less coolant as the years go by.
Simple volume costs are probably #1.

Then JRed is probably in Southern Virginia. Even a Scan test will reveal a bad cat.
