5w-30 and 10w-30 are perfectly compatible with each other. At worst, he is now running 6.25w-30 and in Jersey, this should flow just fine. Run the Mobil 1 for 5000 miles or so and sleep easy!
just tell him that different weights of motor cycle fork oils are mixed all the time to get the right damping characteristics. Silkolene and Motul even state this on their respective PDS' and bottles.

PAO based synthetic oils are generally formulated from a blend of base oils to meet the 5W, 10W and 30 weight multigrade viscosity specifications.
For example, the finished viscosity may be achieved by blending from available 4-6-8-10-25-40 cSt PAO base oils and mixing with the additive package to achieve the final 10 cSt @ 100C for a M1 syn 30 weight oil.
So the 4 qts of 5W-30 blended with 1 qt of 10W-30 is a mix with just slightly more of the heavier base oils.
This will affect the cold temp viscosity slightly in the -20F to -30F range, but otherwise, not a problem.

Mobil says it's ok to mix within the SuperSyn line. I do it all the time, in fact, it's desirable imo.
My son in law just changed the oil in his car.
He used 4 qts of Mobil 1 5w30 and accidentally put in a qt of Mobil 1 10w30 and is a nervous wreck.
He wants to dump the new oil.
I assured him it's not a big deal and would post here to assure him of that.

Rest assured, NOTHING WILL HAPPEN TO THE CAR. He he still doesn't believe, just do a search of the forum, and have him read about the "Mixologist's Club"!
I've mixed before, am still mixing now, and probably will continue to mix if needed. He just might have created a 6w30 or 7w30, that's all.

The overall mixture is most likely still 5w-30. Why would he be nervous?
Here, I can make him feel even better: the concoction in the inlaw's car:
1 qt. Redline 20w50
1 qt. Valvoline Durablend 10w40
1 1/2 qt. Castrol Start-UP 10w30
1 1/2 qt. Valvoline Premium Blue 15w40 HDEO
I think his car will be just fine...(the inlaw's car uses a LOT of oil. No blue smoke, no puddles, just poof...gone. Checked it two days ago and was down 2 qts. AGAIN, after 500-750 miles!)

He just needs to add a smidgeon of straight weight dino to spice the mix and all will be well.
Since the second number in the mix is still the same (sae30) he is in good shape, especially considering he used the same brand, same type, etc.

And if you need any more, go sniffing around the UOA section for results on the 2UZ-FE V-8 engine. As you are probably aware, this engine appears in very slightly different trim in several models, including the LX-470, Land Cruiser, Sequoia, Tundra, V-8 4-Runner, etc. It is one of the very best UOA performers ever seen here. We own a Sequoia, and I've posted several results on it using both M1 and GC (which we ran for 13 months and 10k miles). This engine absolutely loves M1, and this tiny mixing deviation will mean nothing. I admire your S-I-L's anality, but he needs to save it for something else. Goad him into doing a UOA himself in about six months, and once he sees the results, he'll probably want replicate that mix for the rest of the time he owns the LX.
