The Max will need new tires soon (~3k-5k mi). The Critic has brought to my attention the Continental $75 rebate deal and the Sears' buy 4 for the price of 3 deal on Continentals and suggested I try to go price match a set since Sears doesn't have my size.

I was wondering how are they? I only need a set of tires to last 40k mi which is somewhere between 3.5-4 years. Don't expect to drive through snow anytime soon. Need decent dry and wet traction. I drive fairly sane with a few exceptions here and there.

I don't need tires yet so if I get these I plan to just buy the tires and mount them when the current ones are bald. If I can find a set for a decent price, should I buy them or wait and see what other deals come along?

Those tires are OE on the MKV Jetta and the 2007+ Altima 4-cyl.

I'll be honest. I put a set on my mom's 07 Impala as a replacement for the BALD Goodyear Integritys (bald at 20,000 miles). I can't comment on the Contiprocontact vs. other brand new tires, but the 3,000 miles they've been on the car, they've been stellar. Been through snow, ice, and slush without any traction issues. They handle great since the siping pattern is curved, which lessens tread squirm under hard cornering, with no loss in traction.

My only gripe is the ride quality is maybe a bit hard compared to other tires I've had experience with.

I have noticed that they've been slightly redesigned in that there's more full depth curved siping in the tread pattern since they first came out. I bet that has improved foul weather traction with little sacrifice in handling.

Bottom line: value based tire with good performance.

Continental makes a great tire. If your criteria is cost and durability you will not be able to beat Continental. You can always go Michelin, but then you will pay for the name.

The original Continental ContiTouringContact tires on my 02 Volvo had horrible dry rot after 4 years/40K service here up North. But, as Critic pointed out in previous threads, original tires are made to completely different standards than for the replacement market, and the replacement tires may be good performers. Nevertheless, these tires left a bad taste in my mouth.

These came OEM on my 07 Altima. I can't wait for them to wear out, so I can buy better tires. The tread pattern picks up every small pebble on the road. These are loud tires, and the rocks make them even louder. They will probably last 40,000 miles, but they are just an average tire at best. There are better tires out there for cheaper.

Any tread pattern with as much full depth siping as the Procontact will pick up pebbles in the sipes. It's a trade off. You either have lots of sipes and therefore good traction, but with a bit more noise, or you have a quiet tire that will make your car a hockey puck in wet conditions.

Son used the V rated on his Subie. Much better than OEM Bridgestones. Quiet, reasonably smooth ride. Good braking. Good but not great handling. He got 45,000 miles on 75% freeway driving. About 20% city and 5% spirted mountain road driving.

No snow and seasonal So California rain.

They sound like they'll meet my needs. I go around to see if I can get a set for a decent price. I hope I can fit four in the car using the back seat and half of the trunk.

oem on our 08 escape. well-suited for the car. since it's a hybrid, my guess is that they also have a low rolling resistance to help get optimal epa numbers.

According to the Conti rebate "buy 3 get four" will not qualify for the rebate.

Oh well, I'll see what other stuff there are. Saw that Pepboys had buy 3 get one free today. They carry the Hankook Ventus. Might go there to see what tires and prices they have.

If this is still up in the air, I had these in 185/65r15 on our 03 civic in 06, and really liked them. I heard they wore quickly, but we put about 12,000 miles on them before we sold the car and they still had 8-9/32nds, so UTQG of 440 sounds about right. I live in WI and they were decent in snow, better than the stock Bridge/Firestones.

Bought them at tirerack for ~60 apiece. Looked at them for my current 06 Accord but now they're near 100.

I didn't get a chance to price shop and see who would price match Sears' buy 3 get 1 deal before it was over. But the Contiprocontacts (what a mouthful) are still the lowest priced name brand tire in the size I need (225/50/17 V).

Right now at Discount Tire 4 Contipros + tax + install = $585 - $25 coupon = $560 otd. Then -$75 rebate it comes to $485. I don't buy tires often and when I did it was for 14" and 15" tires which are ~$350 otd from Sam's. So is this a fairly decent price or can I do better?

The closest Discount Tire is 40 miles away though. That means if I go for the free rotations I'll have to drive that far which might end up being me rotating them by myself.
